From many discussions I've read (do a search on here), you'll be far better off with a little P&S camera or a cell phone than with a dSLR in a mall. And security does have the right to make you put your camera away or remove you from the mall because it is private property and you might be seen as taking photos for possible burglaries.

If you have had luck shooting in the mall up to now I would think that you have been just that, lucky. Most malls are not happy about people walking about shooting pictures.
I had been contracted by the ad agency that I work with to do some shots of all of the store fronts and some other common areas at one of the malls in town. I showed up in the evening to do some night shots of the outside first and I was amazed at how quickly security was on top of me. When I explained who I was they let me continue but they did say that the info they got was that I was only authorized for the next two days and by rights was not supposed to shooting that evening. Any shots that I did take in the course of this job, which was a full two days of shooting, that had general public in the image that were identifiable, we had to obtain model release signatures on them.
Shopping malls are deemed private property and the security is well within their rights to ask you to stop. I've never found the shopping mall all that much of an interesting place to shoot. Out of my own curiosity, what exactly are you after at the mall in this respect.

It depends on the mall. We have a mall that's basically designated a tourist attraction and so they are very lenient on photography. You'll see hundreds of SLRs throughout a given day there. The mall security only frowns on you shooting into stores or store displays. Other than that and using tripods, they let you have free rein basically. People even walk around video taping everything with camcorders while they walk.

I was shooting from the 12th floor of a hotel/ice rink and security came up and said I wasn't even supposed to be on the 12th floor. Well, the elevator went up no problem. He also didn't want me taking pictures. I was about to push the "down" button when the security guy came up, so no loss.

The malls around here are pretty strict about photography and while I have no interest in shooting in malls, I get aggravated at they way they go about enforcing their policies.
First off, I'm really tired of malls using 9/11 as a justification for prohibiting photography. Do they really think a terrorist is going to walk up with a DSLR and a 70-200 and start taking pictures? The other thing I dislike is that mall security officers have a tendency to single out SLR users. I have been to malls and seen numerous persons taking pictures with point and shoot cameras or camera phones with nary a word from security. Let me walk in with my DSLR and they'd be all over me.
My club did a shoot in our local gaslamp district recently and we met in front of one of the downtown malls. We weren't even in the mall, but outside on the sidewalk and one of the security guards came out and told us not to shoot in the mall.
