Has anyone tried the 70-200 F4 with a 1.4 or a 2X teleconvertor? How much image quailty do you lose with the 2x teleconvertor? Do you think it is even worth it considering it bumps the F stop to F8!

I read a recent article that suggested that with a x1.4 teleconverter, expect to drop about 10% in sharpness, and with a x2 teleconverter, expect 20%. This was for telephoto lenses in general.

I've never seen the effect quanitified in this manner, but I'd certainly agree, at least in principal.

To me, the 1.4X TC produces results that are marginal. The 2X is unusable.

I guess it just depends on the photographer. In some cases, the fuzziness of 2x is better than nothing at all.

The article by George Lepp is in the May issue of Outdoor Photographer.

I have read the image degradation is minimal with the 1.4, almost invisible. With the 2x its quite a bit more noticeable.

It probably varies with the model of teleconverter. I have one Canon x1.4 that is good, and I have another brand x1.4 that seems a bit worse.

I use both lenses & quite often when shooting baseball. During bright daylight hours there is not much loss-ness to be seen bye the normal eye but in low light you can tell it a lot more. I think the 1.4 is a good buy for light carry & when extended needed.

I had the Canon in mind. I can't remember for sure, but I think the Tamron is pretty good as well.

Yes, those are the two I have. The Canon only fits "L" lenses, and the Tamron fits any.

The 1, 4 Kenko is not bad either.
