I shot a couple of shots with bulb mode now during the evening, and suddenly the lens responds with a disturbing whirring noise, and gives me an Err 99. I've tried removing the battery, and installing it again as the manual suggest, but to no avail. Anyone have any ideas?

There's been a lot of talk about 'shutter failure' with the D rebel. If this is the case, you might have to send it to Canon for repair. How many shots have you taken with the camera?

Not very many. I'm scared to hazard a guess even. I bought a 50mm 1.4 lens that I've used quite a bit too. Maybe 50 in total for that lens?

if you tryed everything including taking out battery, CF card, ... the only choice it to go to canon. they will change the shutter for free. I've the same problem with my girlfriends 300D. after changing, no problems any more...

best regards

Hey there,

I just had the same thing happen to me, but I was using the 80-200 f/4.5 lens. I changed batteries, CF cards, turned it off for a few minutes, but nothing worked. It then went from Err 99 to not even turning on at all! I finally changed lenses (to the kit lens), and it started working again. I changed lenses back to the 80-200 and the camera worked fine. I don't know what happened, but it freaked me out. So, I would try changing lenses. It certainly can't hurt.

Good luck,
-Deva

I have had the Canon 300d for only 3 days, have taken appx 100 shots. Using the Canon 18mm to 55mm lens and the Canon 80mm to 200mm lenses. Tonight while using the 18mm to 55mm kit lens, shooting in the manual mode, I get the err 99 message, I removed the battery, the cf card and tried changes lenses and still get the error. I am very frustrated any idea?

I sent my DREBEL to Canon over two weeks ago bcause of the err99. I use a 70-200 L lens almost exclusively, but it also happened with the kit lens. First few times, I thought maybe it was the cards, so I would pull them out and make sure I got good contact when putting them back in, I did the same thing with the batteries and lens, till finally it wouldn't recover. Now mind you, I shoot somewhere between 800-1000 images on a given weekend. But this started happening within 6 weeks of buying the camera. Hopefully, they'll have it right when I get it back.
I'll let ya'll know what the "factory" says was wrong when I get it back. :?

hmm, i got this same error message. but it went away when i took out the battery. i'll have to test it out on some shots. i took over 300 shots with the camera.

it's this a common problem with the digital rebel? it's a good thing i have a 5 year extended warranty.

Well after some more looking, I found a small piece broke off, it is about the size of a pinhead and I am sending it off to the repair center tomorrow.

Thanks, I am actually sending the camera back to where I ordered it from and hopefully they will be sending me a new one. Thanks for all the support. Everything will be okay, at least I am not cameraless, I still have my trusty Canon A60, and my 35mm EOS Rebel Ti.

It doesn't I made it up, I guess I was more tired than I thought. I meant 35mm EOS Rebel Ti. Or just wishing for my Digital Rebel back... Sorry 'bout that.

I had a friend get the error on his DRebel when using a Sigma lens, but it turns out the lens had old firmware. When I put that lens on my camera, I got the same error, which I had never gotten before. The strange thing was that after he got the error on the sigma lens, he started getting the error on his kit lens. I had never had the error, but got it when I tried his Sigma lens. My kit lens worked perfectly on both bodies. I've never had the error since then or before.

Weird wild stuff. I've had trouble finding a logical connection. What could the Sigma lens do to the body which would cause the same issue with his kit lens, but not mine?

Some bodies are more easily offended than others.

it's probably the sigma lens...i have a 28-300mm sigma lens which had compatability issues with the drebel. i sent to sigma to get it fixed.

I got the same message... I tried cleaning the contacts of the lens with alcool (some good old single malt whiskey  , just kiddin')

And the problem disapeared...

I found this info in a previous page answer to solve the problem. Im doing it now as meter is off however I can shoot in manual mode. I did have a Error 99 problem which the manual stated take the batterys out. It still didnt help.
Try this out below I found.

I have been experiencing sporatic error 99 messages for the past two months with my kit lens and my EF 75-300 f4-5.6 III. I have taken just over 7,000 exposures with my camera in 10 months. Last week was

my long awaited photo expedition to the San Juan Islands of Washington
State. Half way through the trip my Rebel refused to take any pictures.

I tried the obvious things but the error 99 message would not go away. It was consistantly making that partial , incomplete shutter trip noise.

I was actually relieved that it finally broke in the last two months of my
warranty so the repair would be covered. I salvaged the rest of the trip
with my Minolta D7 and got some amazing IR shots that I probably wouldn't

have otherwise. When I got back I called Canon and talked to Gary at 1-(800)828-4040. He asked me to try a few things before I sent the camera in. He said:

1. Carefully clean the 8 gold color lens contact pins on the camera body
lens mount with a pencil eraser. Do this while holding the camera so that
any eraser dust will not fall into the camera.

2. Take out both batteries. Yes, there are 2. I had forgotten about the
smaller Date/Time battery. Also remove the CF memory card.

3. With the batteries removed, turn the camera switch on for 3-5 minutes.
He said that this clears the memory.

4. Turn the camera off and put the batteries and CF card back in.

5. Re-attach the lens and turn it back on.

I did all of this and my camera works fine now. I had to re-enter the date
and time and re-select parameter 2 but my Rebel is now working again
and I'm much relieved that it was something that simple all along. Gary
was very courteous and knowlegable and waited patiently on the phone
while I went though his procedure. He said that I could send the camera

in for service if the problem came back. I just thought I would share this experience in case it might help someone else with an error 99 problem.
