Dear all,
I'm about to embark on a journey towards the North of England all the way to Scotland Highland to pursue the wonderful colour of autumn (if sun ever comes out again). And I would like to seek your opinion on the scenic route along the way starting from Manchester.
My plan so far is to head towards Lake District first (not sure where exactly and how long to spend there yet), before move up towards Edinburgh and eventually Scotland Highland. Upon return, I would come back via North East, passing Newcastle and York, before complete the circle back in Manchester.
I would be sooooooooooooooooooo grateful if you could share some tips on where to go, where to stay and must-shoot points along the way, or any other tip that might be useful.
Cheap and cheerful would be ideal, and I'll try to keep head sober throughout the journey even though I'll be bringing my tripod along, who knew what I'd done when alcohol fuels my brain.
Thank you so much for your time! :D :D :D

sGu,
My thoughts would be Lakes (as you mention), Cairngorms for the heather...Sutherland if you have time to get that far.... (Ullappol way, Suilven, stacpolly that region), Northumberland coast (Holy Isle, Farnes, Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh, Alnwick), Yorks Dales (Wensley, Swale) and then York.
If you want some more specifics I might be able to point you.

A great place for Autumnal shots is off Loughrigg Terrace looking down on Rydal ( between Ambleside and Grasmere ) Hope that helps !

I'm eager to head this way again, but likely around December/January
Adam and I recently went to Bamburgh castle, and Loch Lomond - both were fabulous, and saw some waterfalls there (pics in my blog, quite recent posts too)
Good luck

Thanks everyone! I'll definitely pin them down on the map, any recommendation as for where to stay along the route? :D

How are you doing the trip and what kind of places are you planning to saty at ?
First off Manchester to the Lakes is about an hour, suggest maybe here in Kendal or further up slightly into Ambleside day 1, move on up towards the West Coast of Cumbria via Keswick the curl round toward Carlisle and into the Borders - will let a Scot take over from there ;)

Recommend Glen Coe- Must see. My favourite valley in the UK. West Scotland.
Is you wish to see dolphins, go to Avoch, North of Inverness

I'm planning to hire a car for the trip, yet still fighting the cost of public transportation against the convenience of your own car. Decision wise, I'm more towards driving, just for the freedom of it when I spot something worth a frame.
I don't mind the places to stay, cheap and cheerful would be ideal. Preferably with relatively easy access to trek or sites, just in case I feel like nipping to shoot at 2 in the morning!
Once again, thank you so much for taking your time answering my questions! :D :D :D

You'll find plenty of backpackers around, but I've found they need bookings well in advance.
Or the next step up to B&B's.
Or.. That hire car, could have a really comfy seat.
