firstly, i recommend that you don't use sports mode. personally i use aperture priority and aiservo, and i set the af to focus on either the middle spot or the upper spot. this lets you have complete control over iso, shutter speed, and aperture (and shoot raw if you want) instead of the restrictive sports mode.
if you use either aperture or shutter priority you can switch between ai servo or ai focus. you won't get the beep beep - just keep pointing the camera at what you are wanting to shoot - using the af spot where you want it to focus (which is why i choose the middle or top spots)
you can see an example of my rugby shots (www.blackviolet.com/rugby). they aren't the greatest but i've found this method works amazingly well.
just out of curiosity, what type of sports do you shoot?

You can burst away like a big dog in P, Tv, Av, and M all day long.

FYI the reason you don't get the beep is because the Camera has automativally switched to AI servo focusing. (this is part of "Sports Mode")
No Idea why in AI servo it won't tell you it's in focus..

As mentioned.. It's normal not to hear a beep in AI servo.
The thing is, in AI you never lock anything in focus. The camera is continually refocusing and locking on. It autofocuses many times a second. This is how it keeps a moving object always in focus. If it beeped every time it found focus, it would be beeping continually. You should hear/feel the lens 'ticking' fairly rapidly as the AF samples the scene.. Of course you'll see your subject come in to focus as you half press the shutter button.
As far as changing anything... In the automatic modes ALL you can change is your image size and you can change from continuous shooting to timer mode. That's it.. You aren't allowed to change anything else. Not a thing. Every other aspect of the shot is totally controlled by the camera.
Unlike the creative zone.. Auto won't let you do exposure compensation, choose your ISO, set white balance or metering mode.. You can't even shoot RAW.
