Hi all :)

I've recently come across some problems with colour management, which I'd like to get to the bottom off.

I typically do all my processing in Adobe Lightroom, so all the colour management is typically done in ProPhoto RGB. I then export the images out by converting them into sRGB for web, or Adobe RGB if outputting to print.

My issue comes with a lot of photos not havin an accurate colour representations, when displayed under browsers as opposed to properly coloured managed applications such as Photoshop.

Below is a screenshot of what I mean:

http://www.haushinka.org/media/Picture_2.png

The left window is a Photoshop CS3 window, and the right window is a Firefox 2 window, of exactly the same jpeg, sRGB image. Photoshop displays the colour intensity correct, with the right hue and saturation coming through, but the firefox window, shows a much more faded version.

Why is this happening, and how do I go about fixing such a problem?

I understand that different colour spaces have different gamut ranges, but once the image is converted to a specific one (eg sRGB), the image should display the same under every application - is this not right?

Any ideas or comments welcome.

Hi Alvaro,

For colour management problems, take a look at Rene's post:

I believe the problem is that your browser, Firefox, is not color managed. Try using Safari if you can, cuz I think that browser is one of the few that are color managed.

To briefly summarise the issue:

Only colour managed applications such as Photoshop and Lightroom display colours correctly. With anything else (e.g. most browsers) you're lucky if it gets close.
sRGB is a bit of a red herring. Even with an sRGB image the above statement is still true, although the difference with a non colour managed application is usually less than with, say Adobe RGB.
And to answer one of your questions - there's nothing you can do about it!

if your monitor profile isnt based around a 2.2 gamma then you'll see shift on non profiled images or non CM aware applications because the application will use your monitor profile to display the image.

if you convert to srgb before saving and your monitor profile is based upon 2.2 then you shouldnt see much shift.
