I've had this lens for about 6 weeks and I'm very impressed with it. I'm a noob so maybe I'm easily impressed but here are some from the last few weeks.

I'm so excited. I just bought this lens. Found it on craigslist and the owner lives about 40 minutes from my house. I will pick it up tomorrow. He bought it 5 months ago and used it once at the zoo.....it's been in the box ever since. Weeee haw! I got it for $1300. I searched all over and that's a great price from what I could gather.
Thats a great price :-). You mustve picked it up from the guy in Los Gatos (I was eyeing that one for a while :-) ). I found myself a UV (2007) lens here in the on-sale and am waiting for it to arrive. I think that bird/animal photography has significant life affirming value above and beyond the photography aspects. I think it will enrich my life even if I just plain suck at it :-).
The photos in this thread are superb! And I do hope to start contributing something of value soon.

Thank Tony. It was a lucky shot. I was on the James River looking for an Osprey and a couple of kayaker's came along. One of the things I love about this lens is its versatility.

I went to the Jacksonville Zoo this past weekend with my fiance and a couple who had a 3 year old child. That being said I had NO time to switch lenses and such so I wanted to see what I could get with this lens around my neck all day. I was very pleased with the versatility, even indoors in a dark room (see the Cotton-Top Tamarin).

Nice shot!!! Colors are awesome!
Thanks. This was one of just a few decent shots I got that day. The wind was blowing 35-40 mph and every time I stuck the lens up to shoot a plane, the wind caught that big hood and the lens acted like a sail. Even the IS couldn't cope that and most of my stuff showed motion blur...

I thought it worked.
The image here should change a bit shortly as I went back and re-worked the conversion in CS4 instead of LR.
I also cloned it just a hair more accross the top so the pitot tube of the #5 jet (the one peeling off) isn't clipped.
It made a helluva a 14x print.

Here's something a little different - the sun at 400mm + 1.4x extender. It doesn't look very intersting though because we're at sunspot minimum and there are currently no sunspots at all. I used the B&W 10-stop ND filter to correctly expose the sun's disk.

I just got back from Valley Forge National Park and got some nice deer shots. I'll post them here later tonight (hopefully). The 100-400L performed wonderfully (as always). I did set the focus limiter, as once the lens decided to zip between MFD and infinity, and as well as know. this "zip" can be a little slow :) But the IS seemed to work well as at the start (it was RIGHT at sunrise) I was at ISO1600 and 1/100s, but as the sun rose, I was able to bump it down to 800.
Just to add, who would have thought you would need gloves in April? My hands are STILL thawing out

yep, but the turbines are limited to that speed only by the controlling body in Aus. (not sure of the american rules) Their potential is much faster. It's only doing about 50 mph here at a guess on short finals, I can see them at that speed!

To the best of my knowledge its 250 mph max here in the US in order to stay within the scale (1:5) rule...

Thanks Geno DM. I lose the exif when I output DPP into 16 bit tiffs
1/160 F8 ISO 200. @ 400mm
This is a 100% crop with no mods whatsoever. The original one I posted above has been sharpened slightly in PS, and prob some levels as I always seem to do. I guess for a lens thread, it kind of defeats the purpose to post a PP'd one without an untouched one next to it?
I cropped in DPP to 768*1024 and outputted the RAW to JPG with no resizing, so you can see the exif. I did have to go into PS to make the file size to <150K. originally out of DPP it was 300K.
Funny thing is even when I look at the exif in vista, I only see the basics of shutter and F stop. Where does all the lens info etc go when you export from DPP???
I used my 50D and set it to live view at 10 times multiplication for focusing and shooting. i used the 2 second delay so I wasn't touching it when I took the photo....of course.
Live view is worth a motza for this kind of stuff.

Thanks! Yup, you just gotta put the canon TC next to the lens since it has an element that protrudes out:
40D->Kenko TC->Canon TC->Lens = 784mm actual focal length (1254mm equivalent on a crop body).
You can also stack a 1.4x Canon TC & a 2.0x Canon TC, but they only stack one way:
40D->Canon 1.4x->Canon 2.0x->Lens.

My first attempt at shooting birds. I bought the lens from forum member jeev and am very happy with it.
Shooting birds in flight however, very illuminating experience. Gives me immense respect for the folks who make it look easy.
5D set to AI-Servo, multiple-shot and with assist points turned on.
So I see a bird flying, point lens and shoot right! Yes, pointed, see nothing! Hmm.. take lens out and look again, bird is right there. Look through lens again, aaah, now I see it, that faint white blob that I thought was an OOF cloud is the bird. Quickly focus on it! my 5D takes a while (I had the lens accidentally on 1.8m to inf), by then the bird takes a sharp dive and I have lost it. Oh, well, I tried.
After several such tries, I realize that muscles have started growing (atleast fatigue that promises future muscle growth has set in).
Next time! you randomly moving, cloud impersonating birds!! I'll get ya! However next time I'll need to (a) recognize them in my VF (b) Ensure AF limiter is set correctly (3) Worry about IS (4) Worry about exposure (5) worry about the final background I'll get once I click the shutter while panning. Real simple! On top of it, my fingers freeze off as it gets real windy there.
The following photos were shot at the Palo Alto baylands around the Duck Pond. Both hand-held. Only one of them is a duck and the other I call, BIF. Being an ignorant fool, I don't know their proper names *yet*. I have filed them under "birds" in LR. All shot at 400mm/5.6 with no UV filter.
The first attachment is almost a 100% crop. Fantastic result! The images received a standard clarity bump and standard sharpening in LR. The white was ETTR and hence exposure was moved down to the left in processing.

80+ attempts later and about to throw my camera at it......I win! LOL!
(Not a 100-400 lens shot)
Hah! Right! You are obviously pretty amazing with tracking a dfly smoothly with a 8 lbs weight. I on the other hand, will be building character via disappointment.
I am not sure if folks regularly attempt dragon fly in flight (DAFFT ) with the 5D's AF system.

And heres some completely unedited ones I did that I messed up...shooting with the bright sky behind your subject just isnt going to give you usable results I'm afraid.. :( I tried some heavy level tweaking and couldnt get them usable...[And this is with some manual override of the exposure to begin with, i just didnt do enough im afraid]

Shot was taken with my, now sold, classic 5D & 70-200 f/2.8 IS @ 1/5000 s.
Shouldn't underestimate what the 5D can do. That little gem suprised me many, many times. Just takes a little practice and you're there!

I was walking in a park when I noticed this dragonfly following me. No joke...lol!
So I got this bright idea to try and shoot him in flight. No honey btw! :p
After many, MANY failed attempts, I finally got this ONE shot that wasn't blurred.
I just wasn't going to give up and lose! The more I failed, the more determined I was to capture a clean shot and wasn't going anywhere until I did.
Was actually there looking for wild gators.

I've been using this lens for a few months now and I've been very pleased with it. Best pictures when there's enough light of course. BUT, when it's cloudy I crank up the ISO and pics still come out OK. When I compare them with photo's shot by other photographers on the same event, theirs are just as grey as mine and wont sell either BUT I HAVE ZOOM :D

Well I already have an "L" Addiction, my collection includes the 70-200 f/2.8L IS which is awesome but just not long enough for me. So I'm sure that this will produce some impressive results, I just wonder how hard it is going to be to get used to the push / pull zoom compared to all of the others I have.
Coincidentally I am going to a local zoo tomorrow, hopefully Fed Ex shows up before I leave.

Just speaking for myself here, but I find the push-pull easier to use then the normal rotating zoom mechanisms.

Once you get used to it, you will find that the push pull is mandatory for the intended use of this lens, ie: fast paced shooting with a lightweight lens and changing focal length quickly while doing so.
No rotating zoom is as fast or intuitive to use after some practice.

As far as the push-pull, not only is it quite usable, but it really helps make this a usable walk-around lens. Just be sure to have your friction adjustment (whatever it's called) tight enough so it doesn't extend/retract on its own.

I have the predecessor 100-300 f/5.6L and I find myself pulling and pushing like a maniac when my 70-200 is mounted...
25 odd years ago I had a Canon A-1 and I bought a Vivitar 80-200(?) just because it was a push/pull. It was one of the very few back then and praised for the ease of use.
You can create some interesting effects also, shooting with a somewhat slow shutter speed and simultaneously pushing the zoom out...lots of fun.

I read a lot of reviews about the lens and I couldn't find a whole lot of negatives. Now that you mentioned it I actually had an old push / pull zoom on for my Pentax K1000 and I did play with the zooming and you can get some really cool effects with it. I totally forgot about it.
I'm getting more and more excited. Hopefully it will impress me so much that I will part with my 70-300 IS to help pay for the new addition to my L family.

Here's one for you... I got my copy of this lens yesterday, I put it on my camera, turned it on and I got a Card Full message. This when the card was no where near full... I couldn't access any pics on the card. I turned the camera off and back on and it did it again. I pulled the battery and now it seems to be working fine.
Now I'm a little nervous, I've never had any issues with this body (40D) and now something very strange / unusual happens when I put a new lens on for the first time? The lens seems to be working fine but haven't done a lot with it as of yet.

I'm totally at home with the zoom style now after a couple of weeks using it, and I love it.
The only thing I'm still not fussed on is the friction setting ring. It's so tricky to get it just how I like it. Having said that, it's only a very minor thing.

+1
To me, it would be nice to have a separate zoom lock setting, that really locks the zoom 100%. If you tighten it up to the max right now, i still have the feeling that it will creep after some time.
In fact I read on another forum that some user used it for this purpose, but in the end his whole zoom friction ring did not work anymore, since some piece of rubber had worn out.

Any tips for airshow photography to ensure proper/good exposures? or does the meter generally do a good job
Goincarcrazy

Thanks! I think I shot manual for everything that was flying all day that day. The sun was reeking havoc on the meter. The settings would change from one side of the field to the other and I just wouldn't be able to get anything but silhouettes or white blobs depending on where the plane was.
As for tips, there really aren't any. Keep in mind the sun's position, shoot with a CPL if you can (even if you don't use it correctly) it helps reduce flare and glare, as well as eliminates enough light to allow for 1/200-1/250th for prop blur without maxing the cameras capabilities.

That's no air show! You got good weather! I hope I get good weather this year!

I have a CPL thankfully....and 1/200-1/250 for prop blur [Thankfully i have IS]
I take it that means you shoot stopped down to f/11-16 a lot?
Sorry for somewhat commandeering this topic but im supposedly going to an airshow sometime this year, and I wanted to have some idea of what I need to not botch it, even if its just for fun/myself

Yeah, I was hanging anywhere from 5.6 to I think f/11 depending on what the sun was doing and what color the plane was. You'll get the hang of it pretty quick once you start trying it out.

I would suggest you avoid the CPL...
As you pan accross the sky, it's effectiveness will vary from full when you're 90 degrees angle off the sun to totally ineffective when you're straight up/down sun giving you very uneven skies.
I'd suggest you get a grey card and lay it at your feet in the sun. Meter off that in full manual mode. An alternative method I use is to turn my back to the sun, tilt up about 45 degrees and meter off clear blue sky then add 1/3 to 2/3 of a stop over what that reads.
The there's Frank's nifty trick of metering off the palm of your hand (which is a constant because palms don't tan...) and adjusting as necessary.
Start at 1/320 and work down for prop blur. If you can get them sharp at 1/125 or slower, you'll come very close to a full prop disc (which IMO, while sexy, isn't entirely necessary. Just don't freeze them so it looks like the engine quit...)

Thanks for the advice!
I'm going to try to at least practice off of the planes landing/taking off at my airport before going to the airshow..at least the basics will be down then..
My biggest worry is exposure...but from the sounds of it, air on the side of slightly over exposed and i should be fine?

Like just about everything else with digital...
Better to miss a little bright than dark.
Have a look at Keith's website or my galleries. You'll get a pretty good feel for where shutter speeds Vs apertures fall under a pretty wide range of conditions.
One thing you have to keep half an eye on is later in the day when the light starts to go. You'll find your histograms beginning to slide inexorably toward the left as you blindly continue shooting with mid day settings.
Chimp early and often after 2-3pm...
And then there's the issue of panning:

Thanks for the advice :) and yeah I've been discovering that with digital overexposures can be more easily fixed than underexposures [When I shot slides I usually erred to the side of underexposing a tidge because the highlights blew too easily and its taken me a long time to STOP doing that..]
Love your gallery by the way
And panning is going to be..difficult...but im going to try..

You + Me + Boat .. Been there, still do that as well...

Bigger planes farther away = slower relative motion. A big ol' tanker doing a gear down fly by is going to be infinately easier to capture than a single-seat fighter at just under the speed of sound. IOW, consider your subject before you pull a muscle trying to whip pan! ;) Also, don't forget to do some walking around and capture some static subjects as well.

I like the fact the subject mostly blends with the background, it makes it even more interesting

Well I finally got my copy of this lens and had a chance to take it out today. I lucked out when I found this little guy hanging out. So far I am pretty impressed :-)
Forgive the grain, I had to shoot it at a very high ISO.

How about some wildlife amongst the bluebells followed by a nice closeup of the bluebells themselves :)

I went out today to do some birding with the 100-400 on the 1D Mk III with the 1.4x TC. I've been trying to use this combination for a few months, but it ain't easy.
Anyway, I got some nice results.
First, a bird took off before I could get a frontal shot, but here's one of it taking off, together with a 100% crop, then there is a shot of a couple ducks, with a 100% crop:
