It's a 100% Crop from my 40D...

I just picked up a 5D Mark II that I haven't taken out of the box yet. I love taking moon pics to see the details. Now that I have this lens I will have to get back in to it. I will try with my 1.4 TC next time.

The 1.4x is next on my agenda. This new toy set me back a while though. You are more patient than me. If I had a new 5D MII I would have opened it before I even got in the house, lol.

Here's a shot from tonight with the 1.4x and cropped about 300%. It was shot in RAW and processed with the Cannon software that came with the 40D.(DPP)
Tripod was used as well as mirror lock-up Live View. Shutter was tripped on a 2 second delay. This was actually my first time trying live view and RAW processing.

Great sharp shots there, might be worth dropping the shutter speed a tad to get some motion into the wheels.

A little karting from Darlington, SC this past weekend.
(Actually, it was just a mini oval as part of a "Win a Richard Petty Ride Along" promotion)

All using a 1DMkIII at ISO 800. Wx was overcast and getting nastier by the minute:

Interesting sign of the times: This specific location along the Darlington Midway has devolved from a full-up, burn em down drifting course demoing Chrysler "Hemi" cars two years ago, to a sedate pick up truck "test track" last year, to just this little karting oval.

Yup, always do, love it to death

Problem seems to be just general accuracy..and im wondering if its the camera or me...it almost seems schizophrenic at times in regards to tracking..

Or the subject ends up between the two points to the left or right of the center, but before the rightmost or leftmost point...and it loses focus and cant get it back before the subject has left the viewfinder

With my 40D (and when I had a 20D) I simply use(d) center AF spot only and gave it my best effort to keep that spot on target.

The MkIII has the advantge of "helper" points around the selected AF point (as well as allowing you to control how quickly the camera will release lock on the subject) so it's not as difficult to keep tracking your subject.

So im wrong when im also thinking that if the subject moves to one of the other points from center it will automatically pick it up? My problem is i wish for action the center point was slightly larger [Nikon's points cover more area usually..or have the option to...] because sometimes keeping that little point on there can be hard while panning and keeping up

...and the Mark III has a lot of "Helper" points....its got 45-point AF! I maintain if this was my EOS-3 I probubly wouldnt have this AF issue.....

Time to go to a Mark II huh?

It's called Hawksbill Crag, also known as Whitaker Point. It's on the Buffalo River in NW Arkansas, in the Boxley area. To get there it's 6 miles down a dirt road, and then about a 2 mile one way hike. The view this place has is breath taking. I've never seen a photo show just how awesome it is. This place has been on many Arkansas tourist publications. I'm lucky enough to only live about 30 miles from it.

Nope. It is simply a runner for the cable line to attach to. However most overhead power lines are exposed and birds and squirrels use them frequently without any trouble. Since they are only touching one leg (phase) of the power line no current flows through their body. The same would hold true if you were to hang from it (don't try it though, please). Now, if the bird were to somehow touch another phase or ground, he would be toast!

Depends..

If the current followed a path through your heart it would be bad...

Just dont touch ground/opposite phase with the other hand, its still not good for your nervous system/skin but so long as it doesnt go through your heart you wont go into instant cardiac arrest :)

But those powerlines shouldnt be messed with anyways

Nice shots!

Bright sun is a b**ch for nature shooting! Did you shoot RAW? If so you could try pulling down the exposure by a stop or so and then boosting midtones and shadows. If you shot jpeg, you're out of luck, but still very good shots!

Thanks Tony! yep, since buying the 50D all I have shot is RAW. I have some old shots from a 20D I used to use that are all JPG and just cringe knowing what I could do with them now if only I had shot RAW back then.

Just confirming your suggestions, are they a bit washed out do you think? I'm still trying to exactly get my head around the true meaning of "midtones". I know what it means as such, but I'm not sure where the cuttoffs would be. Do I look towards the histogram for that?

Here's a couple more from the same day. It was only the second day I owned this lens when I took this series at Canberra Zoo, and I was VERY glad I made the choice I did when I went through them for the first time!

More very nice stuff, pixelbasher.

The little areas of blown highlights aren't an image breaker, but since you mentioned them I figured I'd suggest the help:)!

I have t go through the same thing with my outdoors photography, whether it be wildlife or environmental portraits or whatever. The nice thing with RAW is that a lot of the highlight info that we can't see in the "out of the camera" shot is actually there, but bringing out that detail is the trick.

Have you checked out the Camera RAW Conversion (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=684360)
thread? We've been having a great time with all kinds of stuff, but there are some nuggets about resoring highlights.

But, your shots as they stand are quite good, and the 100-400 performed well in your hands!

Here's a sample of a sort of bird, well a warbird anyway.

It's an RC plane I shot a couple of weeks back. It's flying at prob 40 MPH at a guess. I also have posted a 100%crop straight from the camera via DPP. It shows that when I get it right, the lens certainly does. The shot isn't perfect of course, but I don't think I have taken a perfect one yet....

Well, this weekend was the crappiest weather/sky conditions I have shot under. The lens performed OK under a minimal contrast condtion. I had a few moments where the auto-focus was slow, especially the gray military aircraft moving at high speed. Still, I managed to get some shots.

keith spot on stuff as usual. If only we had some decent airshows round here. There's only really one or two, both more than 1000km away, and because of that, they are SOO packed, I don't even want to go. Good thing I have an airbas close, but all I ever get is gear down approach shots.

ozfavors: Yep, it sure has a prop. These things fall out of the sky pretty quick without one!
Problem I have found with the models is if they have black props, it's hard to capture them unless they are pointed at the sun. I much prefer the timber props or ones that have painted tips to see the effect.

Ahh, you mean EDF or electric ducted fan. Like this blue one (panther?)
Now this was hard to get. It is only about 700mm span and is damn fast too! I cheated and got this one when he was coming in to land! it was a very big crop at 400mm.

Speaking of fast, the bottom plane is a pylon racer. This thing radared at over 205 mph on this flight and turned 180* in a radius of around 10 meters. The G's are up around 30 or so apparently. I guess you could crunch the numbers based on the speed and turn radius, but I'll take their word on that! I did try and get a shot of it at full noise, but I had NO chance!!
The little 6" prop on it spins at 32,000 RPM and sounds like it would if you got a cat and slammed it's tail in a car door..... not that I would do or condone such a thing!!!, but the shreik it makes is almost painfull!
Shot specs are the same for both of these ISO 200, 1/1000 at F6.3 @ 400mm.

Hey all,

Wait 'til he finds out the wheels, the under wing ones, fall OFF when the plane takes off!! Vehicles follow behind it and pick them up for later use.

Question...

Why are you shooting ISO 1600 at mid day?

This was ISO 100 @ f/5.6 which gave me a shutter speed of 1/750. Plenty to shoot a commercial (or commercial-sized) jet:

Because i was down to f/11 or so, I was afraid i was going to get part of the plane out of focus or something so i wanted extra depth of field, and for some reason i just thought to put it down to 1600 and then forgot it was at 1600 even when i was easily getting shutterspeeds of well above 1/1000....

Planes at that altitude are well beyond any worry about only getting part of it in focus...

I'll keep that in mind then for next time then...I was just being overly cautious

I have more i havnt gotten to yet..I've had a rough weekend of moving various heavy objects, digging, tilling and other things interspersed with moments of photography with my 100-400....and i took several hundred photos im trying to slice down to about 10..not fun

But i will say one of those days i went for hours, doing strenuous work and still able to grab the 100-400 and work with it until the end of the day where my left arm was just too gone to do anything anymore...the 100-400 is just so darn easy to use..

^funny thing is, the buddy of mine who owns the 100-400 also loves taking flower pics, i just wonder how often he uses this over the 100 macro

great shots!

I used to use a 200 f/2.8L for them, I ended up sadly selling it earlier this year because the lack of IS was bugging me, and i felt a zoom would suit better

Dont get me wrong, Great lens...just wasnt perfect...and i used it for 3 years before selling it!

Bought a Tamron 70-200 f/2.8, loved it to death, especially the fact it was a zoom and the VERY close focus distance....but I basically felt it wasnt the right tool for me right now and so I returned it and bought a Sigma 180 f/3.5 Macro...

Again, Loved it, it was nice to have a real macro...but at the time the Sigma 150-500 i bought didnt work out, and I had a dilemma....I solved this dilemma when i looked at the 100-400 and realized it did 1:5 repro ratio just like my 200, the 180 Macro bridged the price difference between my 150-500 and the 100-400, so back it went and i got my 100-400 instead :)

And its actually turned out to be -the- perfect lens for most flowers...smaller flowers i usually go to my Tamron 28-75 for because of the higher magnification, but the 100-400 gives me the ability to alter composition at times i cant just move and the IS has been a great benefit to most of the shots which are done at f/8 or f/11 because of DoF

Also 400 lets me stand back more comfortably from the flowers, i dont have to bend and impale myself on rusty fences anymore! :D

Eventually however, i probubly will add a 70-200 f/4 IS or f/2.8 IS to my system for the flowers and a lot of my general photography..

Oh I also owned a 60mm macro :) I found i prefer a telephoto with a wide aperture to a dedicated macro most of the time...I find lugging a tripod around to be a pain and thats necessary for most macro shots...

I had to back up a lot to get these in frame - and even then I bottomed out at 100mm. Just getting used to this lens. Love the panning feature. Got birds and landscapes today as well. I also have the 70-200 2.8 non-IS, but this new lens has so much going for it, I'm afraid the former may take a back seat for a while.

I took a trip out to the base today and not 5 minutes after I got there the weather came over real dark. I got one shot in sun as soon as I got there, and left 2 hours later with it pouring rain with a few shots inbetween. I stayed only to get some practice shooting slow. And I also found a new spot to shoot from, so it wasn't a waste as such.
The hornet turning to short final was 1/500 at F8 ISO 320. I had to play with them to get something with some sort of detail, so excuse some funky sky colors I can't seem to rid in the overcast ones. Damn to bleak skys! The rear shot was as above, only F7.1

oh, and I got my first ever vapour trails in this first shot, so it wasn't such a bad day! One advantage of hanging in the rain I guess

pixelbasher

The dash 8 was done at ISO 125 F8 at 1/250th. I cropped it tight as those long wings make the shot too wide IMHO and lose some of the fuse detail

I'm gradually getting more stable and more confident at handholding this slow for aircraft. I'm sure it's nowhere near too slow for you long term plane guys, but for me, it's very low, esp for the jets! I'm normally a 1/1000 kind of guy!

The Lear sure has some fancy looking stuff hanging off the hard points

The 50D is getting better results than I had with the 40D. The shots in focus are a higher percentage- maybe something internally new on the 50D than works better with the 100-400. I put a wide zoom on the 40D during the show. Pre-show, I put a 10-22mm on and shoot static displays. Last show, I tried it on a mono-pod a held it about 12' above the ground- really cool!
Today, my Canon 300mm f2.8L IS USM arrives. I'll try it at the Madera, Ca. Warbirds show this weekend. It may be a great experience, or very humbling.
On a side note...
Getting all this gear around on 100 degree days sucks. I think I saw the 20 year old baby stroller somewhere under the house. Think about it, everybody moves out of your way when they see a baby stroller coming. Of course, they will be pissed when you stake out your spot at the crowd line- then pull out all the photo gear!!!!

I went through this last weekend! One of my sharpest, tightest pans at very high speed (100-400L):

Lol!

Sadly i deleted the one i had of the corvette that quickly went behind a tree....I think it was a late 70s/early 80s one, the special edition pace car one to boot...

Shame because the car looked GORGEOUS but had a big tree in the way...

Congratulations, its an L! :)

But seriously, that sounds like a good idea!

I mean one good thing i noticed, that while it wasnt 100 degree days, my camera caught quite a bit of direct sunlight, my 30D was getting very warm to the touch while my 100-400 was still ice cold, That white paint IS very nice sometimes :)

Maybe we should have a thread for best baby stroller/gear cart with reader product reviews and accessorizing. My 300mm f2.8L IS USM just came in and now I'll have to haul that around. I was serious about the stroller. They would give the gear a softer transport and provide shade. You just tell anybody that asks " my wife met up with friends and stuck me with the stroller." Use a "camera bag" that goes with the motiff, but doesn't smell like dirty diapers.

I'll go into the "walker" idea later bw!

Veering off here, but this reminds me of some years ago when we had an organizational barbeque between two different towns. There was an underlying rumor of a waterbaloon fight, but preparations were kept secret...

My wife brought a baby stroller into the park, and was getting all sorts of attention from "the other side" and she had to fend off the peeking at the "sleeping baby"...until the carnage ensued:)!

Quick question: Mine seems to have a bit of a wobble between lens and body once it's on. I figure it's not going to hurt any, but thought it would lock in solid. I have been meaning to ask for a while now if it's a common thing with them. I'm pretty sure my 17-85 kit lens doesn't do this but I'd have to confirm, it's all packed away in the bedroom and the boss sleeps light!

That's normal. Mine does it and I've seen it mentioned by others as well.

+1 my buddies also wiggles while on my 5d2, at first i thought it was the tripod ring, but after triple checking to make sure its tight, i found it was wiggling between the lens and body
pics do still come out OK tho

I have noticed a small amount of this "wobble" too, but also wondered whether its something to do with expansion and contraction as its quite a lump of "iron", and it does seem to happen more when the lens is cooler ... ?
