@Goincarcrazy, shot is without 1.4X TC, the background more than 30 feet away( pretty far)

...the only dust I had in mine was from failure of the paper slip ring inside the lens itself -- And that's because I used it so much!

Even when it had some particles, I never saw an impact on results.

I just ordered a 100-400 last night! I have rented it before and found that I really liked it. I got it on a cool 26 months no interest (if paid off) program so I couldn't pass it up. Price was good too! I can't wait to start "pump'n some dust".

I hope it works well with the new 7D I bought last month? Anybody using this combo?

The only advice I have is put the camera in AI Servo, put the lens in IS mode 2, keep the shutter speed at around 1/80 to 1/125 for the straights and 1/200 for the corners, and keep your focus point on one spot through the entire pan! (Look at page 2 of my flickr for examples).

Something that might help a lot is getting some practice beforehand. Panning a moving vehicle is something that takes some care and then confidence -- you are not only keeping focus on a particular spot of a vehicle, but in order to show the blurred background, you are shooting at a shutter speed that is slower than the 1/focal length * crop factor "rule of thumb".

Before your event, try paying a couple visits to a nearby highway (cars moving steadily at a high speed). Set a narrow aperture (high f-number) so that the target vehicle will have a sufficient amount in focus, and then take a few series of shots at varying shutter speeds -- I'd suggest starting around 1/250 second and then gradually slowing down the shutter speed by notches. Go home, analyze, then go out again to get some more practice until you are comfortable with your techniqe and the results. Your shots will vary between "that sucks", and "wow, I can read the little letters on the model name!".

Note that speed requirements will vary with the speed of the target vehicle and the distance to the vehicle -- the faster the car, the faster your shutter speed can be, but the farther the car, the slower it will need to be. But above all, enough practice to get comfortable and consistent will pay off.

Hope this helps -- have fun!

Well then, this weekend I was going through some older shoots not yet processed, and came across a funny find.

I stopped by a little lake/nature preserve near Portland, OR and near this dock saw swarms of little fireflies over this big area of moss, so I sat down with the 100-400 on the 1DM3 and began shooting, as I was going realizing that nearly all of these little bugs were paired up and mating.

You can see the full set here:

http://www.pbase.com/tonylong/aug_23_08_portland_wildlife_pond

Here's an uncropped shot at 400mm -- as you can see, too wide to be very interesting:

http://www.pbase.com/tonylong/image/120027651/original.jpg

The 100-400 is though no slouch at producing nice close crops so, even though I was handholding and pointing downward it served me well.

Crop of the above:

http://www.pbase.com/tonylong/image/120027652/original.jpg

And I went farther for a number of shots -- these are all 100% crops (with less of the bug-porn aspect:)):

An immature galah flying like a crazy thing down at the park the other day.
There must have been 20 or so recently out of the nest and learning their new found flying skills. When mature the grey around the neck will be completely gone and the grey-ish crest (which I did blow out a little) will turn white.

I had one of these for about 8 years, which I hand raised, so I have a soft spot for them. They congregate in the thousands after rain in the "outback" and form a huge cloud of pink and grey.

I've had a couple Better Beamer flash extenders for 2 or 3 years but had never gotten around to using them, so yesterday afternoon I decided to set out with one on my 1D3 and 100-400 with a 1.4x TC. It was late afternoon, giong toward sunset, and I tried to get shots that let the flash do the work of freezing motion rather than using an ultra-high ISO -- it seemed to work, especially since the aperture wide open was f/8 and I upped it a stop to f/11.

The first shot was at 1/13 sec, the rest at 1/160 sec, all at f/11, ISO 400, 560mm.

Thanks. I had initially thought I'd have to travel way out into the country to get a good shot, but this was taken in my backyard, and I live only about 10 miles north of Dallas in a suburb of over 100,000. So, plenty of city lights. However, it was a very cold night (for us anyway) and the moon was very high in the sky, so that helped quite a bit.

Nice shot xcon85.

Thanks. A foot's a good distance from a lighting point of view, though I imagine you used quite a short tube as these images aren't highly magnified. If you have a longer tube, could you perhaps try it out and report back how it goes?

Madweasel
29th of December 2009 (Tue), 15:31
The longer the focal length, the longer tubes are required. With the 100-400 on tubes, your best way of focusing is actually to use the zoom, odd though it sounds.

My problem is that living down here in the stikx I have to buy mail-order, unseen. So I need the best possible information to make my decision. I'm just trying to decide what length tube will give me good magnification (2:1 would be good) but with enough daylight reaching the subject so I don't have special lighting needs - which I don't have the equipment to supply. The Tamron SP 70-210 that I still own used to do exactly what I want when it was on my A1. I'd love to get an Adaptall EF mount for that, but I've never heard of it.

I suppose with 2:1 you mean 1:2? For 2:1 you need quite a few extension tubes, about 450 mm at 400 mm FL, taking the length of the lens into account, maybe more depending on where the rear nodal point resides inside the lens ...

Your best option really is to get a Canon 77 mm 500D close-up lens (coated achromat), which will give you an additional 0.2X (at 100 mm) to 0.8X (at 400 mm) magnification, at quite reasonable WDs, between 65 and 40 cm or thereabouts from the front lens. No extension tubes required this way, no light loss, and fully handholdable with IS ... :D.

Kind regards, Wim

You can still use your Tamron by getting an adaptall mount for Contax, Pentax or Olympus OM (etc.) and then getting a suitable EF adapter for that mount. Apparently EF Adaptall mounts were made, but not for long and they rarely come up.

Madweasel

Yes, it's one of the advantages of the fact that the EOS mount has a shorter registration distance than almost any other mount (the obvious exception being the Canon FD mount!). You'll see that a Contax Adaptall mount is slimmer than a Canon FD one.

The first one that didn't get scared when I went out on my porch. Usually I have to take pictures of them from inside the room.
I see. I was wondering how you got it to stay still :D

Ouch...What happened to that shot? Looks like it focused on the fallen tree at the bottom of the frame, and it's very underexposed.

Well, when it is 1600 iso dark, or even more iso, and contrast is very low, like in this shot, this lens may have problems obtaining correct (or any) AF. It essentially is, at F/5.6, at or beyond the limits of the AF system on a non-1 series camera, and close to it on a 1-series camera anyway.

A little MF correction is the only thing to do in such cases. This is one of the reasons why I recommend holding the lens by the focusing ring, for one-handed zooming, and focus adjusting if so required. This possibility, BTW, is one of the great benefits of the push-pull zoom implementation by Canon.

Kind regards, Wim

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2799/4262858755_53335bf40c_b.jpg Whee, a turkey vulture in flight. :) I have a few of those, too, but not as good.

And a little late, but Keesbeest, your pictures are just bursting with colors. It's an ugly bird but has captivating eyes. The pic looks very retro. I really like the pic with a giraffe, too. I may be wrong since I haven't used 70-200mm f4 IS for a while, but I think that, surprisingly, the bokeh from the 100-400mm seems to have a better quality to it.

I sold my 400 F5.6 L (which was a stunning lens and easy to handhold) because I wanted versatility. I have to say all the stuff i read about image quality not being so good and it being a dust pump, so far have not been an issue, I clean my own sensor anyway because i live in a climate where it needs it. The images Im getting are sharp so I'm pretty happy with this lens

PrimePhotographer, you can make the moon look drastically different by adjusting settings in post processing. It helps to start off with a decent exposure and a sharp picture. If yours is too washed out, there will probably not be enough detail to bring out with PP. I usually have to shoot at a few different settings before I get a good exposure. I always shoot in Manual, and usually start with something like: ISO 100; Av f/11; Tv 1/125 and then adjust Av and/or Tv from there depending on the results I'm getting. The 2 below are the exact same picture, I just copied the original and post processed them differently. Not the greatest of moon shots, but they serve the purpose to provide an example :D

Different people have different tastes. The above shots are sorta like the different types of HDR, you either like it realistically processed or heavily processed. I happen to like both shots, but the bottom one is definitely more realistic.

I took this with my dustpump/5D a few days ago, after rain. I thought it was a pleasing effect.

Do all 100-400's suck in dust very easily? I have a 1 year old build that lready has a little bit of internal dust. I could care less about dust for the most part as it doesn't appear in images. However, doesn't that make it also more prone to fungus?

I live in perhaps the most dusty environment it's possible to find. Three friends with Nikon setups have problems with murk (not just dust) and fungus in their lenses, to the extent that most lenses last no more than two years. My Canon ones are already older than that, with no apparent signs of ailing. After I read this post I examined my 100-400 very carefully, and I saw what appeared to be dust inside it. I wet cleaned the camera end of the lens (I've never done that before) and the problem reduced a bit. Then I removed the filter I leave attached (because of the environment) and cleaned the outer lens element. When I looked through the lens I couldn't see any dust. So I can say that mine is bearing up very well under extraordinarily difficult conditions. How the dust got on the objective end of the lens though (and the inside of the filter) is a mystery as the filter is never removed.
