I live in perhaps the most dusty environment it's possible to find. Three friends with Nikon setups have problems with murk (not just dust) and fungus in their lenses, to the extent that most lenses last no more than two years. My Canon ones are already older than that, with no apparent signs of ailing. After I read this post I examined my 100-400 very carefully, and I saw what appeared to be dust inside it. I wet cleaned the camera end of the lens (I've never done that before) and the problem reduced a bit. Then I removed the filter I leave attached (because of the environment) and cleaned the outer lens element. When I looked through the lens I couldn't see any dust. So I can say that mine is bearing up very well under extraordinarily difficult conditions. How the dust got on the objective end of the lens though (and the inside of the filter) is a mystery as the filter is never removed.
Extending the lens requires air exchange with the atmosphere. For the most part this happens efficiently and quite cleanly through the join between the two barrel assemblies. There is a felt-like ring in there designed to stop dust entry. A fair amount of air will also excape and be drawn from the rear of the lens. This would explain the dust you were seeing especially if your camera internals were dusty. From memory there is also a breather hole in the front of the lens at the edge of the front element which could also produce some suction. Over a long period it will probably draw in an amount of fine dust through the filter threads.
I think this lens has simply inherited an unfortunate nickname that described older lenses of a similar design. I have been using mine (which is second hand) for over 2 years now and it doesn't have a speck of dust inside.

Your shutter speed was way too slow for that shot. Why did you choose f11? I understand if you wanted the water to not freeze but at 400mm you need a lot faster than 1/60 to get a sharp picture.

At 400mm what shutter speed would you have used?

If you had shot at f/5.6 then you could have gotten the shutter up to 1/250 which would have produced a sharper image. That's about the minimum I would use at 400 unless I had a very stable platform to shoot from (i.e. tripod).

I think it's a fantastic shot. You should be thankful for the fact that there were no branches in front of the bird. It's nice to have a blue background with bird shots, but having one that is perfectly exposed with great detail and good composition (as yours is) is something to be thankful for.

The "dust pump" worry is unfounded. Some think that because you pull and push directly on the lens it somehow draws in more dust than any other zoom that changes its length when zooming. It doesn't.

Why is the lens called the dust pump? I am considering this lens as one of my next purchases
It does suck a bit of dust, try this - take the end cap off, hold one hand over the end that attaches to the body and zoom it in and out to it's full extent. You'll feel the hurricane that it produces.
The benefits of it though far outweigh the issue of dust.
I've had mine for more than 5 years and have no intentions of parting with it.
I shoot motorsport - including a lot of rallies and the odd bit of Off Road Racing and Motocross, all those equal plenty of dust.
Don't lose any sleep over it, get the lens and use it.
If it gets dirty, clean it. Mine gets an annual clean to keep it top notch.
Edit...

Oddly it doesn't seem to attract moisture, which leads to mould. I've had mine for three years in an incredibly dusty and humid environment which has seen several Nikon lenses belonging to friends of mine grow fully-fledged vegetable gardens inside, yet mine is still pristine. It doesn't even have any dust in it. And it's a superb lens in use.
How about this for clarity?

Do you mean you didn't like it, or that you didn't give it much of a thought? I think it's a superb lens.

i bought it thinking i have a 70 - 200 and a 300 f2.8, i got it at a good price thinking i would sell it on. But after using it, im very happy with the results and its the type of lense that can cover alot of spots on track. Ive only really shot head on cars so far. its looking like a lense that i will keep, may not use it alot but handy to know its there. If i look back to when i was starting, the 100 - 400 may have been a better choice to work with. As you said i didnt give it much of a thought, but i do now

I just got a used copy today. When I initially played with it, the zoom function wouldn't extend to 400mm and stopped at 350mm. Then after a while it went to 400mm but didn't all the way back to 100mm, maybe 135. Now it's fine but what's up with that?

I knew someone who had a 28-300L and it would only extend to about 250 because something on the inner sliding mechanism broke. Let's just hope it was a fluke. As long as everything is ok now, you should be alright.

So now I found that there's a grain of something inside near the focusing ring. I can feel a grind when turning it sometimes and I think that is what is causing it stop when sliding it. Sometimes it comes loose and rolls around inside.

I'd be surprised if the seller didn't already know about it, and even more surprised if he gave you your money back. One of the hazards of buying used, I'm afraid.

It's probably one of the screws from the zoom cam come loose. I would just send it to Canon for a repair quote. Shouldn't cost you much if it is working otherwise. If they come back with a list of things that need fixing, take that to the seller and see if they'll refund or at least put something toward the repair. If you got it for chips it would be preferable to get it repaired. As a bonus you'll get it calibrated and tested anyway.

100-400 on the way! I have been comparing the 100-400 and the Sigma 150-500 for quite some time I almost convinced myself to buy the Sigma over the Cannon. Its cheaper, has more reach, and the IQ isn't that far off from the Canon.
But the Canon produces better images IMHO, and its faster. I have yet to see a comparison where the Sigma was better or equal to the Canon. Sure the Canon is more expensive but well wort...... it I'm hoping......

I was going to get the Sigma Bigmos too and was just waiting for photo reviews on the 50-500 OS to compare ...BUT after reading all the good and bad reports with Sigma lenses, yes there are bad reports of lens had to be returmed, etc and then realizing that Canon 100 - 400 had only good reviews and postings, I pulled the trigger on Thursday and got Canon.
Also Sigma 50-500 is selling at MSRP so not much savings...

In my opinion comparing the Sigma Bigmos to the Canon 100-400 isn't really a fair comparison, I tried the Sigma and yeah for the price it was pretty good but I admit that I've gotten pretty used to the quality of Canon Glass and think that the 100-400 is far superior. Then again as you mentioned there have been some talk of issues with the Sigma and maybe I got a bad one?
All I can say is that I am thrilled with my Canon 100-400 and would be hard pressed to go with something else unless of course Canon comes out with something better :)

Thus far, I have not captured ANYTHING that is of mentionable worthiness. It's been rainy, overcast and just plain GREY. And in my opinion, the Dust Pump doesn't perform well in very flat, low light. Especially if you're shooting dark birds on a horrendously bright, backlit, overcast sky. Nothing but silhouettes. :(
Weather is supposed to be gorgeous on Wed, thurs, fri tho, so maybe better luck then! I'll see what I got on todays outing, and if there's anything of substance, I'll post it. No ducks, I promise.

Here is a few from today.. NOT happy with them, however. It was raining, overcast, wet, I was shooting through trees and bushes, it was VERY warm and humid, so my glasses, LCD, viewfinder and front element kept fogging up every time I went to take a shot.. Even with a hood, rain kept fouling up the lens as well.. The eagles kept jumping from tree to tree, and I was bushwhacking for most of the time, tripping on rocks, moss, mud and wet ground. NOT a fun afternoon. I came away very frustrated, and everything I shot was dull, flat and colorless.
But hey, it's good practice for later in the week, when the sun is due to come out and STAY out.

A group for POTN members planning to attend The Abbotsford International Airshow, August 13th, 14th and 15th, 2010.
This group is founded and maintained by Vancouver and Vancouver Island area members of POTN (Photography On The Net), but is open to ALL interested photographers, from amateurs to professionals. This is a Common Interest group, and will be host to other group events.
I invite everyone to look it up on facebook (try THIS (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?v=info&ref=mf&gid=369310467814) link, but no guarantees it'll work!) and join.. It's a closed group, just to keep the riff-raff at bay.
Anyways, if you're in or near the Vancouver area, and interested in hitting up Abbotsford Airshow 2010, join the group. Anyone who lives abroad and is interested in coming also welcome. :)
