Taken in an indoors location with complete crappy light. Shutter speed 1/125s if I remember correctly, wide open, ISO 800. Not fast enough to stop the motion, bordering on introducing camera shake even with the IS on. But the expression is simply endearing.

for those of you that are taking pictures at what seems like a zoo. How are you not getting the cage in the photo? Does the 100-400 fit through one of those cage holes or can you just zoom pass it? Sorry I am new to photography and have never tried taking a picture of an animal inside of a cage.

No you get as close as you can to the cage..and the further the animal is away from it the more it will be blurred out and cant see it. plus wide open apature will help even more.

I hear a lot of comments about how sharp the Canon 100-400 IS L is and a lot of others that say it's soft. Can anyone share some shots of this lens at 400mm to give me an idea of what to expect?
Based on what I've read here, there is a noticable, but not a "huge" difference, in zoom between a 70-200 f4 IS w/ 1.4 TC (280x) and the 400mm end of the 100-400, so I would want to make sure that what is captured at 400mm is plenty sharp. I would hate to get this lens and then feel I had to back off into the low 300mm range to get good shots.
I looked at the archive and I see a lot of good shots and some that are a little soft, but it's not obvious which of these are at the full 400mm.
If anyone has any feedback and some shots, I'd love to see them! So basically, sell me on this lens! :D
Regards,
Rick

You wont be dissapointed, just be aware this lens takes some practice to get great shots and it really needs a lot of light to get the shutter speed up.
Check out some shots in my wildlife gallery, most are at 400mm. Should help you get an idea:

Quick shots taken at 400mm this AM. Lens is acceptably sharp at f5.6, but my advice would be to stop down 1/3 or more. Lawn bunny at f6.3 and dollar at f8. I thought for a while the lens wasn't that sharp, but after reviewing some shots taken with this lens earlier, I noticed some of the soft shots were from user error. IS helps with 400mm, but it doesn't guarantee a sharp shot.

I have both the 400L 5.6 and the 100-400LIS. The 400 is a very sharp lens. The 100-400 is entirely capable of taking great pictures at 400mm. No, you do not need to back off the range. The 100-400 would not be such a popular choice (and used by professional wildlife photographers) if that were the case. The difference between it and the 400 is minimal if you fill the frame with your subject and aren't printing poster size. The difference is almost gone if you stop down even 1/3 stop on the 100-400. However if you shoot wide open and start cropping alot, which is not uncommon for wildlife pics, the advantage in sharpness of the 400 becomes apparent (assuming you have it on a tripod). I'll try to post some pics when I get home.

Thanks. The first thing to get used to is the zoom function, it's tricky to master. The other for me, was knowing which shutter speed I needed to get sharp handheld shots. Honestly, my rule of thumb has been to keep it above 180 (even with IS), because at 400mm, it can be tricky to hold it still enough to get the sharpest image. So, given this lens has an aperture of 5.6 at 400, ISO will become your best friend. Learn the highest ISO acceptable to you in different lighting conditions, and you'll be fine. For me, I hate using anything but 100, but with my 30D, I've gotten great shots at 800. So experiment.
Use a tripod on still subjects or reasonably slow moving subjects and You won't be dissapointed.
The only other thing, it can get a little heavy.
I love this lens and never leave home without it. It will also get you very nice close-ups (4-5 ft) of creatures.
Good luck

Hope they compare to others.

I was going to get the sigma 100-300 f4, or 400mm L prime but might spend a little more and get this now.
Does anyone know how the auto focus is between these to, I'll be using it for a mixture of things like motorsport, football [soccer],will it be able to keep up given the light of course. and I might dabble into a spot of wild life shots as well :D , then save up for the 70-200mm 2.8 for when the light goes away.
I keep changing my mind every day  , but if the 100-400 will focus quick enough for football motorsport then I think we have a winner.

On the contrary, the out of focus osprey in flight is what does it for me. It provides a cool 3D effect of true depth/distance between the two birds. In-focus on both, would have not depicted distance between the birds as good. The other bird looking back at the approach probably wondering, do I stay or do I go, makes one wonder what's about to happen there!
Great timing!
Great shot!

I am new with my 100-400mmIS USM. I am having a tough time getting sharp, clear shots. I am trying to understand I need more light and better shutter speed. Getting the correct shooting mode is taking a while. but with the help of people on this board, I think it is helping out. I took a few today while on vacation to kill some time. Hope they compare to others. They are OK, but if you want WOW clarity you should shoot in RAW so you can adjust the contrast, exposure, saturation, shadows, etc to give it that better look. Only thing to really avoid when editing a RAW image is sharpening, a minor tweak is ok, but anything other then that is not that great of an idea. Best of luck.

Superb lens as long as you don't expect miracles, I took mine out a few times and got decent results, then took it on holiday and ignored all the basic rules of long len's. The results were poor. So as long as you think about what you are using, it's a brilliant lens.

Am often told my 100-400 isn't the sharpest tool in the drawer, I just smile and nod.
Learn proper technique and this lens will resolve as fine as any pixel peeper would care to see. For some, the technique means having a tri/mono pod or having at least the 1/focal length shutter speed or even both. But learning to support the lens properly and not "hold" it, a decent brace or stance, stroking the shutter not pushing it and even breathing properly can all help make for a great shot. The following are all handheld.

Yes I was going to send my lens back after 3 days because I thought it was a bad copy.
Aye, there's a moral there!
Back in my Nikon days, it took me six months before I started seeing the results I was looking for from the Sigma 80-400mm OS lens on my D70: different lens, same kind of issue - nothing seemed as sharp as I expected.
Then one day, BANG! It all started working out.
When I subsequently came to Canon about a year ago, it took me approximately one afternoon to get my head round the 100-400mm.
Even so, it seems to me that I'm still improving, and even after a year I regularly get pictures that make me go "Wow! That's better than I expected!"
To put it another way: I don't believe I've got a super-sharp 100-400 (though it's plenty good enough for me) and yet I'm sure that I haven't reached its full potential yet - there's better to come as I get better at using it.

Here are a few shrunk down for this forum. All handheld from the 100-400 at 400mm's. I think it's really sharp, but I do have to keep the shutter speed up when shooting handheld at 400mm's. Way better shots than the old 75-300 IS.

The 100-400 @ 400 with a Kenko 1.4x extender....
The flower has been slightly cropped to remove some distracting greenery. It was shot at a distance of ~12-15 feet.
The plane is uncropped. I have no idea how far away it was - 1/2 mile? 1 mile? 3 miles? 5? I really don't know. I think for the 100-400 at full stretch, wide open, and with a 1.4X telecon, shot at long distance through a UV heavy sky (no filter) the results are pretty good.
Exif....
Flower - Canon 30D, 1/250, f/5.6 (=f/8 with extender), 100 ISO, 0EV

I agree about the learning curve - the biggest lens I have used is a 200mm fixed on my F2, years ago, so the 100-400L on a 30D was a big leap forward. I have played a lot with it, handheld and tripod, and have found that the best is 1/125 at f8 minimum, and adjust ISO to make that possible. I love the lens - and like previous posters, I think it will eventually make me a better photographer.

What did you mean by this? Do you mean because the 1DMkIIn is a crop sensor so the corners of the lens aren't as important?

In the first shot I used : ISO 400, F18 @ 1/80th exposure time, Matrix metering on Program Mode. In the 2nd shot it was ISO 200, F11 @ 1/320th exposure time with Matrix Metering on Program Mode.
^^ yeah - nice shot....were they handheld?
I had the lens mounted on my cheapo Velbon UP 4000 Monopod but it does the job although thinking of upgrading to a better/sturdier one.
Thanks,
Mike.

Instead of saying that the second pic is a 100% crop of the first. You need to post the actual full size picture as that first picture has also been cropped.
