Need help to decide about the 1.4 TC on this lens. If I use manual focus on 100-400 with the 1.4 tc on in a 5D mk ii, will the Red lights blink on the focus points in the camera?

To maintain AF all you have to do is tape the pins on the 1.4 extender per the below detailed instructions.

Just use clear scotch tape cut in a small rectangular shape to cover the 3 pins shown in this link:

Thank God for IS! I had been hiking and taking pictures in Valley Of Fire State Park all day and just as we were getting into Henderson, NV, a herd of Desert Big Horn Sheep came down out of the mountains. This one just stopped and posed. It was late in the day, and much darker than the photo looks. I happened to have the 100-400 on one of the camera bodies, but no time to mount it on a tripod. I cranked the ISO up to 1600, braced myself and took the picture. One picture and he was gone.

It also helps with the nasty habit some have of keeping all the images in a post when quoting someone even though they're just commenting on one image.

This is beautiful. Absolutely love the perfect reflections in the glassy surface of the water.

My 100-400 is currently sadly neglected as most of my shooting these days is general walk-around using the 24-105mm. I think I will have to book an outing to make use of the big lens in the next few weeks.

FYI , if anyone is interested i have decided to sell my UY Dated 2010 100-400L that still has the warranty intact until Nov. of this year.

I purchased it from a wedding photographer in Delaware that only used it one time on his 7D and decided he didnt really have the time to use it.
I myself have essentially only used it to conduct the extender Tests in my Signature below. Since i have the 70-200 f2.8 MKII that does accept TC`s so well i dont need to keep this practically brand new 100-400L.

So before i list it in the Sell sections here and other locations, just thought i would mention it here first for any prospective buyers of this nice lens.

The 'amsterdamse waterleidingduinen' is a large preserve which humans use to purify water, and animals use it to live in. So this fox isnt a captivated one, but he and his friends grew very accustomed to humans. So every once in a while some fox turns up to you and says hi.

The 'amsterdamse waterleidingduinen' is a large preserve which humans use to purify water, and animals use it to live in. So this fox isnt a captivated one, but he and his friends grew very accustomed to humans. So every once in a while some fox turns up to you and says hi.

Ah, very cool!

Around here there aren't too many "wild" critters who are that used to people. In the area wetlands there are these large rodents, nutria (people call them "river rats"), there are beaver in the area but not that many and I think they maybe only really come out at night 'cause I see signs of beaver activity (chewing down trees) but never actually see the activity...and of course the lowly possum and occasional racoon...

But sometimes you hear about activities out of town, things like cougars, wildcats, even foxes, and of course deer and elk -- I am just too close in to be able to just walk outside and catch them!

Whatd you do?

-edit- looking at a few other photos i really am not sure if my 100-400 is ok or not still :( I'm not sure if its the 100-400 itself, the fact my expectations are a lot higher because of other lenses i've since acquired or my 7D actually cant focus that well on smaller objects in the frame at a distance (ie the birds and such i've been shooting)

I need to do more experiments...

I did it with Photoshop CS4 and Topaz Adjust.
First, in Photoshop, I made a duplicate layer of your photo. Then, I converted that layer to a smart filter and ran that layer through Topaz Adjust to sharpen it. Unfortunately, that gave me quite a bit of haloing around the subject (which I expected...that's why I converted it to a smart filter). Taking it back into Photoshop, I then brushed out the haloing. Once that was done, I made a selection of the background and darkened it just very slightly to give a little more separation between the subject and the background. It took about 10-15 minutes. If I really wanted to do it right, I'd probably spend a little more time on the feathers on the back of the head/neck area. I think maybe I have them just a bit over sharpened. I don't think there's anything wrong with your lens. This is kind of a difficult photo for the camera/lens to get right straight out of the camera because the subject and the background both have somewhat the same tonality. I have this lens and really like it. Click on this link http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1001651 to see two versions of an eagle in flight that I took with it.

Blargh...To restate what i said in another thread

I'm starting to think my 7D might fail at focusing on smaller objects in the frame... I've been having some odd problems with my 100-400 lately D: Some people are saying im being crazy but its just not giving me uber-wow-sharp shots..my 100-400 definately "felt" better on the 30D...

Example crops:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v170/scifiguy1012/Photography/lrsquirrel2.png

I feel his tail and the tree behind him looks sharper/more in focus than where i focused, which is on his head (And about the shutterspeed, i was shooting supported and it was consistent across several shots, also he wasnt moving..)

(For reference heres the post processed version of the last image)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v170/scifiguy1012/Photography/IMG_3571.jpg

The problem is, im only noticing it with distant subjects, if something is closer then things seem to improve dramatically, But the subject is also usually much larger and more "frame filling" when that happens...So either the 7D is locking on better and focusing better in this situation OR the lens is only "off" at longer focus distances...

Either that or my other lenses have spoiled me..Or my 100-400 needs a calibration

I did that a few months back...Better results but it was also on a closer subject..Which im not having issues with

Before i slap it on a tripod and try that (since my tripod is currently buried who-knows-where-covered in 5 inches of dust) im going to try shooting it handheld without IS..one theory is the IS unit in my copy is not performing right and blurring the shots on me or its actually not doing squat

Even still i feel i should be able to use this lens at 1/250 just fine without an issue, I used to shoot it at 1/160 on the 30D and got great results out of it...

This is 1/60th wide open with a 1.4x. Manual focus, IS off, Live View, and remote release. Actually, I was really impressed. Never had the 1.4 on the 100-400.
So, do a test and check to results. Start with checking the lens in manual, then progress to some auto settings.

Alright..I'll try it, i could also try finding the monopod i have buried somewhere and seeing if -that- helps...

I'll also -try- putting the lens to f/8 for a bit on top of it...

I looked around a bit in my archive of exported shots, Anything i have that i kept from this that looks really -really- good was shot at f/8 and was at <300mm....

Those should help quite a bit. I find that mine is considerably sharper at F8 than at 5.6. You may also need to micro-adjust. Also, as stated, you're double the resolution now, so a 100% crop is going to be more nit-picky on the 7D than the 30D.

That being said, nabbed there yesterday:

Blargh after considerably more testing and a little research a couple folks have me thinking i may have a 7D affected with the dreaded "random schizo AF" problem which is very hard to accurately diagnose as its...random and schizo...

So perhaps its not the 100-400

I would like to mention i took another 130 so shots today, I'm not posting them because i dont see the point, But if im shooting at 1/2000, f/8, ISO800, at a robin, in a tree thats very well lit, using 1 shot, single point af, bursting series of images and refocusing if the bird moves, that i should be getting something sharp in the image, even if its just the branch under the robin's feet...Though technically i feel the entire bird should be sharp, in focus and fine because those settings should ensure a perfectly sharp image...

The only couple that were OK in terms of sharpness were when the bird turned its back to me, Apparently i can focus on a bird's behind or back, But not on the front of the bird...Even still though its like its not quite focused properly, Also i got a good shot of a bird on the neighbor's roof that was quite close, But again, Close subjects are no issue for my 100-400 and 7D it seems (It was sharper despite being shot through a filthy window!)

And the reason im not doing a focus chart is i have no clue where to put one thats not closer to the lens within the "Good zone" im calling it...I'm going to say the bad zone on my 100-400 seems to be where the focus limiter ends or so...6.5m, anything closer is fine

Are you sure its not the camera's contrast detection? Your problem sounds quite similar to a problem I had. I sent it to canon for a fix. 98% better... from time to time, the problem comes back, though.

Interestingly though, i see you've mentioned several times that it was great on the 30D but not great on the 7d. so, then, i got to thinking, it may be something as simple as:

I already ruled out microadjustment as a possible reason because closer subjects i have 100% no issue with

Also its not consistently back or front focusing, its doing both randomly in different amounts

The other option is as also pointed out in that article, i got a 100-400 from a bad batch and i just never realized it until i got the 7D....the reason closer subjects look better is the details are just larger and easier to resolve...

sounds like the best resolve is to send both 7D and lens to Canon for specific calibration i'd hate to say. Of course, while it'll be razor sharp for the 7D, it probably won't be so lovely with the 30D anymore. Good luck.

As Roger Cicala points out in his excellent article, bodies and especially lenses are delicate instruments built to extremely close tolerances. They way i see many people handling their lenses I'm not surprised they have performance issues with them - I'm surprised they work at all. I am VERY careful with all my equipment (not just photographic) and as a result it remains working to original spec for a long long time. I have no issues with either of my bodies or any of my lenses. I had thought that perhaps this was because I was undiscriminating, but especially after reading that article (see the reference a few posts back if you don't know what I'm talking about) I'm now pretty sure it's because most people are so clumsy with their gear and expect it to perform to spec. Obviously equipment can be faulty out-of-the-box, but I suspect that isn't half as often as is made out in these pages.

I definately give my gear everything it can take and then some, never had a problem. If your spending all your time paranoid over your own gear your never going to get the most out of your photography. Just be smart about it. I see the whole white glove treatment such a waste.

peterbj7
16th of April 2011 (Sat), 10:12
I don't mean treat them with kid gloves, I mean try to avoid gratuitous heavy treatment. If I'm in the middle of a wedding shoot I drop unused lenses into my camera bag without bothering with end caps, to make the process a bit quicker. But if I'm out just doing elective general shooting I ALWAYS put the end caps on - I've seen the results in this climate of leaving them off for long periods. And of course at the wedding I drop the lenses into soft pockets in my camera bag, not just in a heap at the bottom. And I flip the cover over to stop crud falling in onto the lens surfaces - adds less than a second.

And in over 30 years of SLR shooting I have never dropped a lens, even though I've done lots of demanding semi-pro engagements in some outlandish places (like up the sides of cliffs). Seems simple to me, but I keep hearing of others - I know some here - who routinely drop lenses and seem to think it shows they're busy working hard. No, they're working clumsily. And I've only once ever dropped a body, in highly extenuating circumstances.

You could be right on that...Or as i said, my 7D might have that dreaded 7D focus issue that some users reported (and had a difficult time trying to pin down the cause) im just trying to think of a good way to trip it up some

I'm going to try my 100-400 on my dad's t1i to see what happens, Just in case it is indeed say, a bad copy of the lens or something...must say its quite an awkward combination to use tho...

My worry about sending the 7D and the 100-400 in is that im going to end up like the guy in Roger's article, Where suddenly wonderful, my 100-400 works but nothing else does :)

-edit- Come to think of it, if im shooting at f/8 and that with a decently far subject id think i've got a healthy chunk of DoF, enough that i should be able to reasonably get my subject in focus...

a) used that combo since Aug 2009 (it was my first "L" lens with my T1i). Didn't find it awkard...but then again, I didn't have another body either... so it just "was" I guess :)

b)... true that :(

so if its a focus microadjust error, it could ALSO be that its SO off that MA cant fix it lol...but as i said it seems to be random and its also not "grabbing" a target correctly

wow... guess in the end, unless you're going to dive into the 200-400+1.4 L, you might end up sending it in anyway... especially if you're not having the same problems with any other lens on the body.

I just tried it on my dad's rebel and it was like someone rubbed vaseline over it at f/8 o_O

I'm gonna give her ONE more shot when i get slightly nicer weather, just to rule out if the slight overcast day we're having is at fault (Though i used the 100-400 before in similar conditions with perfectly great results before)

The problem is SO weird...its REALLY hard, i just do not feel the 100-400 is consistent enough, and i expect it to be consistent!

for comparison this one is from a 70-200 mm F2.8 series II on a 5D2, the color is closer to yours; the 100-400 mm shot above was from a 7D, maybe the 7D was set on a warmer WB
