What did you mean by this? Do you mean because the 1DMkIIn is a crop sensor so the corners of the lens aren't as important?
More likely that the AF is good with the 1.4ex.

Here are a couple. The Gull was on my first try with the lens at 800ISO. Coal Tit was taken in my garden.

More likely that the AF is good with the 1.4ex. Actually you lose the AF with any of the extenders. With the 1.4ex you keep the IS. With the 2ex you lose both AF and IS.

Am often told my 100-400 isn't the sharpest tool in the drawer, I just smile and nod.
Learn proper technique and this lens will resolve as fine as any pixel peeper would care to see. For some, the technique means having a tri/mono pod or having at least the 1/focal length shutter speed or even both. But learning to support the lens properly and not "hold" it, a decent brace or stance, stroking the shutter not pushing it and even breathing properly can all help make for a great shot. The following are all handheld.

Me too, but..... It would be nearly as big around as my 300 f/2.8, longer, and probably heavier. Probably cost more too. Maybe a 4.5 or 5.0 would be a good compromise.

It worked out very well. I plan to either buy one or rent one again for the next show. We did not get the 400 5.6 L after reading all the suggestions on that thread. I am glad we didn't. Getting into the show with a large bag was a hassle. I don't know if all shows are like that, but in the future I plan to travel light. Carrying the two lenses plus others just doesn't make sense.
Another issue was that the planes fly pretty close. Being stuck at 400mm would have meant missed shots. It might have worked for single planes but for the formations the Thunderbirds fly in the zoom was best to have. I actually got some nice shots with my 70-200 and 1.4 TC though too. But the best shots were with the 100-400.

Sounds like a good plan :) I don't like getting weighted down either, especially when I have to move through crowds and things like that. All the shows I've been to are crowded, some of them require you park a fair bit away due to the large number of visitors, and so on.
Glad you found the zoom useful, I certainly did. Formations of planes, or large aircraft that fly close to you are best served by a zoom. I have a very nice A380 (yes, the 550-seater superjumbo) that would have been impossible with a 300mm lens - I had to back off to 200mm or risk cutting bits off the aircraft because it flew that close to the ground and the spectators. Was using just a 70-300 IS (the sharp one, not the soft 75-300's) in those days, but again, no zoom would have meant no shot :)
And my contribution to the thread, 1-4 at 400mm f/5.6 and 1/160 handheld with IS on.

You can see that DOF is very very shallow at these ranges - the tree and the bowl are in perfect focus, but the hip of the animal (if I recall it's a wallaby?) is not.

Yeah, it's pretty unique as jet vapor shots go. I shot this at MCAS Miramar a couple of years ago. It was an early morning F/A-18 demonstration and it was just the right combination of conditions. The amount of humidity in the air, the angle of the sun and the path of the aircraft all combined to give this effect. I haven't seen the same effect since. I do admit to doing a little bit of enhancement to the image, but it was nothing more than a slight increase in color saturation and the usual sharpening.
A lot of people think vapor is caused by exceeding Mach 1 (breaking the sound barrier) but this isn't the case. The majority of the jet vapor shots seen on the internet are shot at airshows. It is a violation of FAA regulations for these aircraft to exceed Mach 1 over populated areas, which is where all these air shows take place.
Here's another aircraft shot with the 100-400:

I read this before and it's true, the vapor cloud forms just prior to breaking the sound barrier. The threshold is just a few mph below that but still pretty close to it. Too bad they won't allow that at air shows, sonic booms are intense!!!

I probably use this lens more than any other, so I thought I'd post a few pics. All the shots were taken with a Canon 30D and with the 100-400mm at 400mm f/5.6.

You are prob correct but I was imaging animals in a nature reserve when I saw it and it was too quick for me to change the zoom setting. Two other similar pics show less colour and thats it... I am happy that I did not cut the wheels as in the next frame and that it shows a strong diagonal. Maybe I should cheat a bit and clone a little bit of additional sky towards the right and bottom...

Thanks. It was hard to get decent shots as this little guy spent 20 minutes picking his nose.
Some of my shots were well under the 1/focal-length rule but turned out crisp. As well, there were quite a few that did not. Funny how some people will say that the 100-400 isn't that sharp ;)

I soooo want a 100-400!! Researched a 70-200 F/2.8 IS with a 2X TC and a 300mm F/4 with a 1.4 TC.
a 70-200 F/2.8 IS with a 2x TC would be great but sharpness at 400mm is less than a good 100-400 is.
How are the new 100-400s? Still sharp or is it a case of getting a slightly better one? or is QC worse now than before?
Cheers :)

I just purchased a 100-400L and should get it in some time next week!
Does anyone use filters with these (UV or CPL's)?
Thanks in advance :)
I use a UV on mine and have a CPL that will fit it although I haven't used it on this lens yet.

Congrats on the new purchase! :)
I leave a UV filter on my 100-400L all the time, and occassionally, I pop in the CPS as well.

Thanks for the quick answers re: UV filters, I will pick up a nice multicoated UV.
Fantastic pics in this thread and the 100-400 @ 400 thread also...I have been thinking of buying on of these for a few months now, and these threads finally convinced me to drop the $$$ :)

Not me - there's a wealth of evidence to prove that they can (note - not will) degrade IQ, and I've had it happen to me.

I don't own this lens, but rented one and finally got a moon shot I can be somewhat proud of. This is at 400mm, iso 100, f11 and a shutter speed of 1/50 I believe:

I was wondering how good this lens handles with sports during the day. Do you guys think the 300L f/4 IS is better then the 100-400?

I actually used this lens during a night game at Yankees stadium and it worked great... I've also used it for air shows, and Tigers baseball games during the day and its great.... Here are two from the Bronx.

I'll see if I can dig out some shots of the Tigers from last season using the 100-400 . Looks like we have a Detroit thing going.

Here's a jpeg taken at a night game. It was hard to swing the big lens around because the game was a sell out, someone was always in the way when i wanted to get a shot.Camera was a XTI.

Jeez guys, although its a different beast, I must say that this thread is making me think about buying this lens and delaying my planned 70-200 f2.8 is usm purchase until later.
And there I was thinking I had it all worked out and the low light flexibility of f2.8 and awhen needed for extra range, a 1.4 extender, would help make up for it not being a ~400mm capable lens.
Last time I visted the zoo, my 24-105 wasnt nearly enough for many photos. A 200 would be better, but a 400....sweet!

My copy shows up tomorrow with an XTi included in the box. I will attempt to take some shots with it and see if mine is soft too!

Update: Ok so I got this lens on Saturday and just took this shot on the fly through our hotel room window on the 7th floor this morning.
While it's not a stellar shot it is very much up to my liking because of the situation.
Used a 20D to shoot with it also. Gonna take this lens and the 20D to the zoo tomorrow and test it out with my newly acquired 70-200mm 2.8 lens also.

Purchased the lens a few weeks ago and this was my first chance to take a walk in the desert. Here is my first "bird" shot. I wonder how these guys can sit in cactus without getting injured.

Most people generally like the 100-400. I've tested a few copies and found it to be acceptable so I bought one. I found myself at 400mm constantly on it otherwise I was using the 70-200 in my bag. Once I shot with the prime 400 5.6 the 100-400 was immediately sold. Not that the 100-400 is "bad" but the prime version is noticeably sharper at every aperture. So if you really need the range of 100-400 I say go for it. If you really only need the occasional 400 I would opt for the 70-200 2.8 (non IS) and pick up a TC to go with.
