The kitty shots are awesome!! But decisions, decisions :(
How does the 100-400 L IS compare to the 300 f/4L IS and the 400 f/5.6L?
The 100-400 cost $300 more then the other two.
Am thinking that the 300 f/4L IS with a x1.4 (already have this) will still allow it to autofocus and be same as the 400mm with exception that it has IS. How does the IQ compare to 400mm?
400 f/5.6L with x1.4 will be even better :), but not sure if I want to not have IS at 560mm.

I can't speak for the 300mm, but a friend of mine and I just compared his 400mm 5.6 (no IS) to my new 100-400LConsidering the hype about how much better primes are supposed to be, I was amazed at how hard you have to look to see the difference. Even wide open, the zoom "ain't bad." You have to realize, that some of these photos are about 5 feet square on a computer display. I recently "went I.S." because of my shake problems. I'm very glad I did

I've been doing a lot of outdoor wildlife photography lately, and have decided that my recently acquired 100-400 is my new favorite lens! Absolutely no regrets on the purchase. The reach is amazing and IS works as advertised.
I tried the taping trick to get it to auto-focus with my 1.4xTC, and the results were shaky, at best. Some people like the taping trick, but I decided to remove the tape and just use MF instead -- works great.

Heh - very kind, CDS.
Some of these are better than others of course - some are heavyish crops, and there's a TC on the 30D shots (though I'm convinced that actually sharpened the lens up! ;)) - but I think they give a reasonable indication of what the 100-400 can do.
I can't take much credit though - I just point the camera and press the little button!

Thanks Roy, I just got the lens and now I regret not getting it earlier! Its a sweet and sharp lens and to my eyes even sharper than my 70-200 f2.8L. I am considering now to let that lens go and have it replaced with the f4 IS version as I do not need two huge lenses.
Right now, all my earlier doubts raised by many who say that the lens is problematic or poor quality has all disappeared. The 100-400 has more keeper shots than my 70-200 for every 10 shots taken.
I will share more when I finished processing them.
Cheers

I guess it helps that it was a bright day. I do not shoot action but I figure you must have handheld to pan this image. Continuous shooting firing at 6fps at minimum of 1/1000sec?

Nice shot! I have a similar one but of a cheetah. When I looked at the picture I thought that I had a lot of dust on my sensor, but it was the flies around it's head. When you looked at the picture at 100% you could clearly see the flies. When used properly, this lens is fantastic.

I returned to my latest hunting grounds on Saturday and this time round I captured a few of Orang Utans which translate as Men of the Jungle.
Those who are unfamiliar with these primates - they are seriously endangered with less than 3000 in the wild and found only in the forest of Borneo. The forest there is quickly disappearing due to deforestation for palm and paper pulp industries. Genetically they are our closest animal relatives. Just look at these hands and notice their finger nails.

I clearly enjoy photographing animals and hope to shoot them in the wild someday but practising at the zoo is satisfying for me. The 100-400 has become my most favoured lens for outdoors and now having consistently been able to capture everything I wanted with great colour depth and sharpness, it is by far dollar for dollar an excellent lens for wildlife enthusiasts.
Thanks for looking! :-)

we know that 100-400 is better in versatility, but 300 sharpness is something else, out of this world, and if you will use TCs, then 300 is the winner no doubt.

This lens is really a great asset to your kit, ans quite versatile light fast AF, it just suffers in low light, but then so do most tele photo lenses around this price range

It can depend on many factors, such as steady footing, wind conditions etc. However, 400 mm on my crop body can produce many keepers at 180th sec.

I just fired off a series of test shots, handheld at 400mm without bracing myself against anything. Shutter speeds were in 1 stop intervals from 1/800 down to 1/25. I've posted the results, with full frames resized to 25% and 100% crops for each image. These were processed from raw files in DPP with sharpening set to 3 out of 10. Exif data is in the images...
http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/EezyTiger/100400ISTest?authkey=DbutAVudHeQ
Here are the results at 1/25. I think diffraction softening from the f/36 aperture is more of a problem than camera shake. I did fire off a sequence of 5-6 shots at each shutter speed, and did cherry pick the best from each, but nonetheless, the result here at 1/25 is pretty good. That's 4 stops of stabilisation, and if you factor in the 1.6X crop it's well over 4 stops. One other shot at 1/25 was equally sharp. The other three did show some shake.

Crash coarse...no layer for you:lol:
open photo. go to adjustments, curves, the diagonal line across your histogram should read from bottom left(deepest shadows) to top right(brightest highlights). If you click on different parts of the photo you will see a spot appear on the line that where the corresponding tone appears on the line.
you can use the curves presets on top if you want. linear contrast would be your best bet and go from there.
Get you feet wet though. no presets. ON THE GRAPH its split into sections. look to the left, go one section over and click the line, drag down and rightish slow, your shadows will darken (just slide a little to not loose much detail)
Now look at the right side, go one section to the left and grab the line drag it up and leftish, the highlights will brighten with some of the rest of the image. Just tweak that till you like it and use the preview CHECK BOX to switch back and forth to see the difference.;)
Hope this helps Id du it for you but people dont trust people to not steal their work haha and you should learn anyway :D

I just got the 100-400mm IS and yesterday was my first good weather opportunity to use it. I was at the Viera Wetlands in Brevard County, Florida. All shots were with Canon XT, ISO 200, handheld.
The first shot, the least bittern, is 400mm, F/6.3, 1/500.
The second, the heron, is 400mm, F/5.6, 1/800.
There will be a learning period for me with this lens, but I was pleased with the results.

Or if you tape the pins so that it doesn't report... but you have to have good light.
In any case, I just slapped on the Kenko 1.4 onto the 100-400L to snap some bird shots and decided to shoot a quick moon shot. One of these days, I really need to put this combo onto my tripod and do this correctly, instead of just handheld.

Thank you Roy, I believe I have a really good 100-400, and it has acceptable IQ with the Kenko 1.4x. I ran it through the paces back when I did the comparison to the Bigma 50-500, lens to lens, then when I did the TC (1.4 and 3x) tests.
Here is one from this evening, resized to fit POTN, it worked out pretty well with auto-AF on the MKIII at 400mm with the 1.4x at 1/160th, IS obviously helped.
I am very curious how the new Sigma offerings this summer will pan out, I wait with abated breath.

I downloaded a test pattern to check out my 100-400 L at full zoom. See results below.
The smaller curved lines in the center are only a couple of pixels wide. I think this shows excellent sharpness at 400mm. In taking this kind of picture you must be very careful not to introduce any vibration. I used a tripod with IS off, shutter lockup and a remote shutter trigger. I made sure no one was walking around in the house and I stayed perfectly still. I could look at the image in the viewfinder and see it wiggling around with just my wife walking nearby. This image is a JPEG from the RAW original. Some of the resolution is lost going to JPEG, but you can still see that the focus is excellent.

Hello all, I've had my 100-400mm for about 2 years and I really love it for birds and airshows. However, I have seen a couple of posts in different POTN forums about the 100-400mm not getting along well with UV filters. I use a Canon sharp cut UV filter to protect my lens. I will have to try some photos without the filter. Any opinions about this lens and UV filters?
