I agree with what you said but that is ture for pictures taken with any lenses. It still does explain why the pictures taken with the 100-400 look better. Is it just my imagination or the "L" magic?
Compared to what other photos? There are many archives with different lenses, some Canon, some 3rd party, and they all have great shots that "pop". Heck, even take a look at the 18-55 kit lens archive, in the right hands, almost anything is possible.
That being said, here is my most recent moon contribution to the 100-400 archives.

Having just hired one for a trip to the Western Isles of Scotland, I can now post a few in this thread. I think the lens is great, and it now has a firm place on my shopping list!
These were all taken on and around the island of Mingulay, using my 40D.

I finally bought the lens earlier this year. First used it at the Houston (MN) Owl festival back in February, which was the perfect occasion because of the variety of owls and the versatility of the lens. It was an overcast day so I used fill flash. I was very happy with the sharpness and color of the photos. These were all hand held on a 1D Mark III.

I shot a friends 100-400, the lens I was prepared to hate-on his MKIII and fell completely in love. First off I was supposed to hate the way the zoom worked, I LOVE IT! And if the image sharpness comes out anything like what I was looking at, I HAVE TO HAVE ONE! I think I almost filled his 4 Gig card LOL, I wouldn't give him back his camera.
I was shooting people and this guy on a windsurfer being pulled by a sail and the windsurfer had skiis on it, like a mini hydrofoil and it moves really fast and the guy was really good and the light tonight was just awsome.
The rest of the time I shot people spending the evening on the beach with my 85 1.2 at between 1.2 and 3.2 and came up with some really great shots of half and full body while blowing out the background.

the Canon 100-400 ,i think it is soft
Now why would you say this considering you just posted regarding:
"What kind of like camera should I buy that's not too expensive..."
Not nice to parrot things that you may not know anything about...
photobitz
29th of July 2008 (Tue), 04:34
After reading the odd post about the 100-400 being soft, I was put off buying one when I first upgraded my tele lens (I wasn't particularly keen on the push-pull style zoom either). Recently however, I picked up one of these in a gear lot and gave it a go. I was pleasantly surprised with the results.
I'd say the main issue is getting the shutter fast enough to counter any camera movement at 400mm.

I'll vouch for that. You have to go to Eastern Oregon to get storms - though we did have one on Saturday night at about 3 am. I didn't get up to shoot it though.

It's funny -- shortly after I posted the above a thunderstorm started, lightning hitting less than a mile away from me:)! The problem in this area is that the lightning is scattered and sporadic compared to some of the awesome storms I've been in in other places.

Yeah, the 100-400 is definitely my pick up to the 400mm mark. It's still pretty good with a TC but no AF unfortunately (well unless you tape pins or have a 1 series body).

You really should give RAW a go. It's much more forgiving and can save a picture that would be worthless as JPG. On the downside... it does make you a little lazy with exposure.
Great shots there BTW.

Before starting with RAW, something I would definitely need to get first is a bigger hard drive! The 3258 photos I took at that airshow would have taken up a phenomenal amount of disk (and memory card) space if shot in RAW! As it is in Normal JPG it took up a little less than 4GB ...
I've been meaning to get into it for a while I must say .... and I will do when the funds allow for a new drive :p Although as I'm already eyeing up this lens I'm not sure the funds will be available for quite a while :p

Actually the next 2 frames were great, he applied full power & went up like a rocket. An emergency landing was made in the tall grass with minimal damage, and the unfortunate part is that he went looking for the wheels & tires once it was recovered. They did the search way past the point they were lost, but I couldn't tell him that until I downloaded and saw where it actually happened. The full album from that event is here (just the Jets, there are 2 other albums ) including shots of the landing it forced him to make.

Was that one of those kerosene powered mini jet engine planes?
cicopo
28th of August 2008 (Thu), 08:20
Yes it's a real jet (or gas turbine to be more correct) engine. There are photos in my album of several of them, and I am totally amazed by them. They have somehow got them down to less than a foot in length, and one version can produce 55 pounds of thrust. They require a computer to control them much like modern cars do, and it's owner programmable (I don't know how much the owner can tweak) and each engine seems to come complete with the computer etc as a package. I've been reading up about them and as a mechanic would love to tear one down. More info about them can be found here www.jetcatusa.com
I didn't realize they existed until the first event I attended this summer, but they have really changed the R/C hobby, and while flying they sound exactly like a jet does too. When one gets started they always have a fire extinguisher on hand, which indicates that there are some risks.
(from the first event I attended, and with a 5D & 17-40L if I remember right)

Amazing how far the technology has come. I remember only a few years ago RC modellers were trying to pass off scale "jets" with propellers and chunky piston heads hanging out of them.
A few months ago they were flying some of these mini turbine planes around at an airshow I went to. I spent about 10 minutes trying to work out why the "jet aircraft" being flown was not on the flight schedule. They do sound so real.

I fly RC too!! Just helicopters though. They make turbine helicopters too. Full acrobatic. We call it 3D flight. Turbines are so cool, yes they run on kerosene. They stink. No gasoline that I know of. About 4-5K just for the turbine. Some of those jets are EXPENSIVE!! And it only takes a fraction of a second to screw up. And when they hit, they blow up just like a real jet. Some will top out at 300+MPH!!! Some simulate bomb drops, tank drops, afterburners, and flame outs.
If you have any questions feel free to PM me. I have been doing it for some time now and worked at a hobby shop.
My 100-400 never leaves my 40D. I have other lenses that feel lonely from me not using them. I will try to post a couple pics.

That's an interesting shot. All the squiggly lines are giving me headspins!

If you stare at the duck, completely focusing on it for 20 seconds if begins to swim back and forth across your screen. :)

My first chance to use my 100-400 while n holidays, I must admit it felt way strange carrying it around when everyone else was shooting pics of animals with the camera in their phones

Looks great!...what kind of setup, settings did you use? I'm unable to see exif. Unfortunately it's been cloudy here so I'll have to wait for tommorrow to take a shot at it. :)

Also used the TC80N3 remote and, of course, mirror lockup enabled.
Thanks!

Flag Beach Kite boarder
That looks like Aaron Hadlow, he is the 4 times world champion from the UK, nice photo.
I think it is him due to the board, kitebar and stickers.
nice!

The look on his face is priceless. Great shot. How did you get him to have that expression on his face?;)

I walked by. It was a luck shot. My mirror lock-up was still on from shooting some waterfalls. I went to take the picture after composing it and it went black, so I quickly pressed the shutter again to get a shot off. I didn't see the shot until that night, I was amazed that I got it and how good of a shot it was.
