That looks like Aaron Hadlow, he is the 4 times world champion from the UK, nice photo.
I think it is him due to the board, kitebar and stickers.

At 1/1600 you really didn't need IS of any kind. You may as well have turned it off altogether.

I walked by. It was a luck shot. My mirror lock-up was still on from shooting some waterfalls. I went to take the picture after composing it and it went black, so I quickly pressed the shutter again to get a shot off. I didn't see the shot until that night, I was amazed that I got it and how good of a shot it was.
I often do that with the self timer and end up waiting 10 seconds for the shutter to go off!

Just picked one up Saturday from a guy who was selling one on Craig's List. I met up with him and checked it out. As he stated, it was almost new (he had bought it 6 weeks ago) and had a UW date code and all that. Anyway, luckily I got a great price on an even greater lens.
1. This was taken in the parking lot when I was testing out the lens.

Problem with 400mm is that sometimes you can't see the upcoming action at air displays and on this occasion I completely missed the close passes and ended up with only one of the two planes in my frame.

Thanks Goincrazy. I hadn't displayed any of these on a forum!
This one is a rescue job from a very poor exposure. Really its about the beautifull background created by the mass of lingering coloured smoke towards the end of the show.

Haven't tried it at an airshow yet. I have that problem with birds which are probably a little less predictable than planes. But then again, birds don't have to keep to a schedule ;)

I know what you guys are talking about! This summer I started practicing the "one eye on the viewfinder the other on the field" technique for action scenes because there was often several potential shots happening at once!
BTW, great air show shots, Luke

Okay I've heard reference to the lens as a dust pump, is this fair, has anyone here had that actually happen to them with that lens and was it with a lens that was new within the last five years.
Sometimes rumors get going and become legend based upon a very few occurances. Someone in manufacturing once told me that a 2% failure rate is considered pretty small percentage, yet when we get on the internet, five people can make it seem as though it's a really bad product.
Not that sometimes there are things we really do need to know, and another thing I've learned over the years is that there is a lot that goes into both cameras and lenses and it doesn't take one, the other or both to be out just a little bit for it to not be sharp or look good.
Now I think of them as tools, when my car is out of tune, it goes to my mechanic. Especially if I buy "L" lenses, I know they were designed to be excellent and if mine is not, then get it adjusted, get it fixed and I've had excellent results. But it doesn't mean that all lenses or cameras of that model are lemons.
I just have to think that if this lens was really a dust pump, then they wouldn't still making them the same way unless they managed some fixes along the way or they'd develop a series II version for us.

Well, I imagine that the push-pull action of the lens would tend to suck in a bit of dust, but I've never noticed a real problem, but then I don't look into my lens for dust. I look through my lens to get a shot:)!
The same thing is said about the 17-55 f/2.8 IS (it extends), I just don't know how much of this is a real problem and how much it's transferring anxiety over spending $1K for a "non-L" lens.
People have referrend to the 5D Classic as a "dust magnet", which is silly. The fact is that the 5D has more than twice the sensor space as a 1.6 crop camera and so collects, let's see...more than twice the amount of dust!
So, to me the 100-400 might suck in a bit of dust, but I haven't seen a problem with capturing good images with it. Maybe in a few years it could stand a cleaning, but for now it is a very useful, versatile lens.
Rudi

You will get dust inside any lens over time, even a prime. My 100-400L has one dust speck inside it after two or three years of use. Doesn't affect the image quality, and doesn't worry me. My other lenses probably have some dust inside them too, I just don't check that often. I tend to use them instead. :)

Actually, the title of this thread really pisses me off as I consider the 100-400 one of the finest lens made by Canon and to have a thread name like that is irresponsible in my very humble opinion!
I have had mine for years and no dust of course but I guess people can say any thing they want!

I was swayed by that nickname originally, but after having used this lens for some time it I think it is an unjustified label. I imagine it only creates enough suction to pull dust if you extend it rather quickly... you just don't do that when you use a lens like this. Not often anyway. I also think it depends where you store it... if you leave it to get covered in dust then sure, there will be dust there to get sucked into it. The only suction I have noticed is from the rear of the lens so unless the inside of the mirror box on your camera is full of dust, it shouldn't be an issue.
As others have said, any lens will get dust in it over time. I haven't noticed that the 100-400 has gathered any more than my other lenses and I doubt it would ever get to a point that it would affect my pictures.

Depending of your answer, i will have to buy a 5Dmk2 like or a 100-400L :D
Or both :D

Well my experience being on this forum is that people talk about this lens being unsharp wide open at 400 and a dust pump, but what my eyes see in the photographs is exactly the opposite, it looks to be pretty fantastic.
Yes I've resisted buying that lens several times because of the negative labels. Once I was even in my car, on my way to the store to buy it and by the time I got there had changed my mind because of these concerns.

Jannie,
I use the 100-400 as a "walk around" wildlife lens, frequently without a tripod or monopod, and I find it's really capable of delivering great shots over its whole range. I don't expect it to be at a par of the long primes, but to me the long primes aren't very good for hand-held shooting.
So, with a series of shots from the 100-400 hand-held, I have ones that will not be real sharp, but then others that will jump out. That's what I'd expect with a hand-held series. If I'm going to shoot with support, I'd maybe opt for a prime unless I was having to carry it around a lot, but I find the versatility of the 100-400 to be a winning factor.
Just for another perspective, the 100-400 is not as sharp as the 70-200 series, but I'd definitely choose the 100-400 over the 70-200 with a TC.

I did the same - avoided this lens for several years because of the negative reports online. Then I decided to get it from a local dealer, so I could try it out before buying. I need not have worried. :) This was shot with the 1D Mark II N and 100-400L, plus 1.4x Extender II, wide open all the way at 560mm, handheld. I'll let you make up your mind about the sharpness. :D

I do think 1/60s was pushing it a bit on this one especially @ 400mm. Can see a little bit of shake creeping in but it is a beautiful exposure nonetheless.

Thanks Dan,
I have had some success with even slower speeds before but this baboon has always been elusive. This was shot without tripod in a rush because it was in a unique position and facing me. So I did not want to loose the opportunity and shot it really quickly but I should have pushed the ISO higher to ensure a faster speed as its the only one shot that is useable from about half a dozen.
Anyway, here are a few more...

I can safely tell you that the 100-400 is no dust pump!
With a weather sealed 1DMK3, I haven't had one extra spec of dust on my sensor using this lens and yes, have used the combo in extreme dusty environment.
Besides...how in the world would dust make it through ALL the glass elements within the lens to get to your sensor anyhow? Virtually impossible! ;)

Correction - For panning, tripods do nothing but get in the way. A monopod may be usefull, but typically you want to be free to rotate your entire upper body completely. It's more fluid. But everyone has their own technique.

Personal preference I guess. Also depends on the plane you are panning along... tripod is really only going to help pan in one plane (generally horizontally) which is a bit limiting I guess. You may also prefer to use a tripod if you are shooting with a 600L ;)

'zactly! I figure catching a jet at 2-300 MPH is a good indication the AI Servo problem doesn't exist on that particular body. There's no doubt it's a problem on some though.

The Vickers is 1/4 scale and was scratch built by the owner AND he is now building a scale 9 cylinder rorary engine for it. He was able to get the drawings for the engine from the aviation museum here in Ottawa. He built one before, but it had a (suspected) overheating problem and seized. That engine was built for an Avro 504 which he also scratch built. There is a link to his personal web site in my on line album that I did for the local club where the flight took place.

At his web site there are photos (small) of all the parts he made for that engine, and my album has a few shots of the new partially built engine. He's obviously very skilled & has access to some very good machine tools.

My pleasure. I'm an auto mechanic by trade but restore GM muscle cars for a living, and my father was a career aero engine mechanic in the Canadian Air Force so you can understand me being totally intrigued by the concept of anyone scratch building a model aircraft that size, and then to find out he was building a scale radial for it. If he was to keep track of the hours needed start to finish I'll bet it would be one rather expensive engine.

My obligatory duck shot. My first since buying the dust pump. Although I think the 17-55 is way more of a dust pumper!

That's a nice duck.
Those ducks would have gotten up on the bench I was sitting on. People must feed them at the one lake we go to. They weren't scared of us at all.

Some very sharp bird photos there. Well done. I hate to think of how many rolls of film I wasted shooting Pelicans down in the Keys one year. They were very entertaining around the fish cleaning station, and I tried to capture all of it.
On another note there are 2 threads going re the 100-400 and I added some samples to the other one and a couple of days later couldn't find them and thought they were removed for some reason. It took a while but I finally realized that there are 2 different posts with many samples in each on the same lens. I can't offer a solution, but think they should be tied together in some way.

The other 100-400mm thread is for shots at 400mm because a lot people claim that the lens is soft at tha focal length.

Very nice!! Can you post a 100% crop from that second one? Not that I'm a pixel-peeper but I'm interested to see the quality of the 2x on that lens ...
Great photos everyone!
Cheers :)
