This lens continues to amaze me. I wonder if Canon is ever going to release a MkII version? Then prices will drop and I can get one! I have to rent the Sigma 150-500 to test but this has won me over so much.

I just posted this shot of QE2 leaving Southampton for the last time in the Transportation thread, but thought it also served to show the capabilities of the 100-400L in low light. Taken at 170mm, 0.3s, f/5.6, ISO 1000 on my 40D.
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/garlicpickle/Canon/IMG_4448-9web.jpg
What I think is really impressive is the amount of detail in the original, as shown in this 100% crop, where you can read the ship's name on the stern, and see people on the decks.

Handheld, IS on, ISO 800, 400mm (other details are in the exif if you're curious).
Edit: Just to avoid misleading anyone, the background had nice bokeh before PP, but I did apply a 2.0 pixel-radius Gaussian blurr to the background to smooth it out, and I applied medium sharpening to the bird using unsharp mask, although the unprocessed image of the bird was tack-sharp to begin with. If used properly, I'm convinced that this lens is sharp as a tack at 400 mm if used correctly under the right conditions.
I also took advantage of the AF microadjustment feature in the 50D to get the AF dead-on. I highly recommend doing this if your camera supports it, as it made a noticeable difference in the sharpness of my images.

Not very happy with the lens, using it at 400mm, wide open, but stopped down and pulled back to less than 400 it produces some quality images, given the fact one knows how to use it.

and one at 400mm:
Mind sharing the shot settings?
The last one looks like you were focused on the closest finger rather than the bird... could it possibly be an issue with front focus? I seem to get much sharper shots out of mine at 400mm than any of the ones you posted. Do you shoot RAW or JPG? Were those shots processed at all?

Dan, I am not sure of the exact settings, but I know the last one was shot at f/5.6, 400mm in Jpg, The first 2 were shot at a shorter focal length. Minimal PP was done on all. This lens is about 3-years old. I am planning to get a 400 f/5.6 L USM prime after selling this one next year.

Thanks. The low ISO with the blind and being able to get so close must be the key to the total lack of noise. I can't wait to get back to NJ and buy a blind. I'm out in California on military training. I'm hoping to get some good wildlife photos out here on my time off.

Quote taken from my post & photos above.
Just to add to this - I just happened to look at my lens this morning and noticed that the image stabiliser was off. That's made me even more impressed with this lens, that I was able to capture images that sharp @400mm without any stabilisation.
It also explains why some of the other photos came out softer/slightly more blurry than I would have liked. I originally put this down to user error with a new lens and fast moving subjects (those squirrels can certainly move!) but now think it may have something to do with the lack of IS (which I guess still comes down to user error )

Thanks!! These guys were really close under 50 feet. The owner didn't want me to get to close, his property so I must abide by his rules, and very nice to let me take the shots. I just always have a hard time with the color white. It's not my friend. Any tips on making these an even better shot? Or are they ok as is. Seems like the lighting at the end of the day was not so good. Low sun, slightly overcast and cold.

I'd say those came out pretty well -- you got good detail in the white, which is sometimes a challenge. If you can keep from blowing out those whites, then you have room to adjust things like shadows, contrast, etc, in your computer and still have good whites. On the other hand, if you had a lighter exposure, you would end up losing white detail, which is no good!

So, I went for a "duck shoot" a couple of days ago with my trusty 100-400, but with a twist: I used it with a 1.4x TC, something I've always been loathe to do with this lens.
But I was grieving over my selling of the 300 f/2.8 IS, which took that TC so well, and I figured this was my best chance of getting decent reach.
On my 1DM3, I can use this combo and still get AF, but it's at f/8 at the long end, so in addition to my fears of softness I also had to shoot at ISOs from 1600-3200, which is also a challenge, and even then I had slower shutter speeds than what I prefer.
But, I was pleased to have gotten keepers! Not worthy of National Geographic, maybe, but some shots that I'm happy to have in my library!
Here are a couple using ISO 3200:
This one's about a 50% crop:

Thanks Tony I've always like my 100- 400 IS. I'm very careful when using it. I like to use my tripod and dampen any mirror slap as much as possible. Most of the time, I place my left leg at the foot of one of the tripod's legs to get sharper images.
Want to do some AF microadjustments but have not done any yet....

1. Obviously, a landscape
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3351/3195114727_b16b08dfd8_b.jpg
2. I threw on a few extension tubes and managed to focus at about 3 feet at 400mm and could have gone closer. I wouldn't call it a macro lens, but it sure helps for things that are too close to focus on normally.

Here's twin spoonies from a couple years ago. I tested the 100 - 400 IS at 400 mm. with my 1.4TC. Shooting at 1/100 sec. on my Canon EOS 1D with an aperture of f/16 got a sharp image for me....
