Does anyone have any sample pictures using a 100-400lis lens with a 20D? I am looking for pictures at full and medium zoom. I am really considering this lens soon and would like some feedback. Thanks. I have also considered the 300mm prime, but I think this lens would work better for what I have in mind hence the post.

I think that it would still be a pretty darn good lens for those of use that don't have a 1 series camera.

Nice shots Marko.

Those are amazing pictures. I'm probably going to the Bronx Zoo tomorrow with my lowly 70-200 F2.8 IS and 1.4 teleconverter. Don't think I'll be able to zoom in that close though, unfortunately.

But why the fence between you and the big cat? Couldn't you have just gone in the enclosure, snapped a few quickies, and beat a hasty retreat?;)

I tried that once. Given all the excitement of photographing such a glorious animal I totally forgot about the "retreat" part, let alone "hasty."

Heh, I didn't want to be kitty bait. But actually, the fence is a totally enclosed cage in this case. No way to shoot without a fence in the way.

The shot of the cat looking longingly through the fence was of course the statement I was trying to make.

And make it you did. Off to the zoo tomorrow. Not hopeful my shots will come out anywhere near as good as yours.

I am saving for the 100-400L 4.5/5.6 IS. I would like very much to see what others have been able to capture with this lens. Especially small birds as, that is what I really like to capture.

In particular I would love to see just how sharp an image this lens can produce of a bird at relatively close range (back yard shots). To be more specific I guess I am talking about 100 feet and closer.

I am also considering the 400L prime as well as the 70-200L. The 100-400L right now is at the top of my list for it's reach as I also like to shoot larger birds, e.g. Raptors, GBH's, etc. Please help me decide.

GyRob

i would think for small birds the 400f5.6 L would be better then the 100/400 .

there are some very sharp 100-400 L's out there, however you will probably end up shooting at 400 mm most of the time so why not just get the 400 MM prime f/5.6..... 400 mm on the 100-400 L (IMHO) is alittle soft....

I have literally thousands of shots that will testify to the quality of this lens. Its hard to pick just two so these are representatives. Its made me a better photographer I think. There was a learning curve with this lens before I maximized its potential. I have taken quite a few less then stellar shots also.

Here are a couple more 100-400L shots.I personally love the zoom. I use a hide to get pics of small backyard birds ( sparrows ,chickadee, etc ) , but when a cardinal or bluejay lands I need to recompose and I cant backup. I also need the IS because I take alot of pictures while on my boat. I dont think I would get many keepers without it.

Weighing up between the zoom and the 400 prime which are both excellent lenses, I would take the added versatility of 100-399 focal length, the IS and the closer minimum focusing distance of the zoom over the slightly sharper (if you are doing extreme crops or poster prints then the difference may be noticeable) and faster focusing prime every time. See if you can try them both out before making a decision. If the prime had IS it might make the decision harder for me, but I would then need at the very least a good quality 70-300 range IS lens in my bag as well. I have taken lots of shots with the 100-400 that I simply wouldn't have been able to get with the prime but never missed any shots that I would have got with the prime - that says it all to me. Anyway enough waffle, here's a few bird shots from the 100-400...

Okay, I know I said I had made my mind up and decided to go with the 100-400L. Well, that being said I have changed my mind again and this time I have decided to order the 400L 5.6 prime.

I looked at a lot of images from both and I know the 100-400L is more versatile, but I believe the 400L produces sharper images, especially out at 400mm.

Tomorrow I will order the 400L and again thanks to all for the invaluable input on both lenses.:D

Congratulations on your new and first large whitey! Beautiful lens, a little heavy for me, but for photographing at the zoo, it's an absolute beast of a lens: it seems to weigh a tonne after carrying it around for a while, but it seems solidly built. It draws lots of attention and everyone seems to mutter that you must be a professional.

However I'm always busy looking through the viewfinder and trying to nail the shot. The ability to rack back and forth from 100mm through to 400mm means that this lens is supremely versatile for longer range shooting and getting the perfect framing is almost never an issue. On a 1.6X crop camera, things seem even more beautiful since it's almost like having a 600mm f/5.6 lens on you for those times when you really need the reach, or want to crop in tight. Last but not least, the IS is beautiful.

Speaking of the zoo, I got a few shots from there not long ago, but I can't say which is best since they're terrible for the most part. Conditions were pretty shady with no direct sunlight, and it was necessary to bump the ISO up to 800 or 1600 for a decent hand-holdable speed. Here's a random two out of the more decent lot:

Thanks :)

Congrats on the new lens. I totally understand the excitement of getting a new lens. I've been there and quite recently as well. What I'm a bit confused about is why you chose to buy the 100-400 when you didn't know what you were going to shoot with it. I personally have only ever bought a lens or other item when I've identified a need for it. I'm just curious is all... I do hope you enjoy your new lens and take lots of pics to post up. :)

I have literally thousands of shots that will testify to the quality of this lens. Its hard to pick just two so these are representatives. Its made me a better photographer I think. There was a learning curve with this lens before I maximized its potential. I have taken quite a few less then stellar shots also.

These are great!, did you use any support or did you handhold these?

I use a 100-400L, have a look at some of my galleries here - http://www.ae-photography.co.uk/gallery.html

The shots from September 2005 onwards are almost all with this lens. It's ideal for motorsport. Stopping down to F8 definately improves sharpness. It does depend what you are shooting and the effect you want but 2% seems quite a lot keep rate...

I was lucky enough to be hanging out at the feeders at the Nature Center at Grandfather Mountain for that one. The Pine Siskins were absolutely ignoring me. The bokeh doesn't hurt any either. I was even able to get some pretty good ones with the 24-70 on the 5D! The hummingbirds, on the other hand, were a little harder to get.

For the TBM, it helped to have a brother-in-law with a hangar at the approach end of the runway during the air show. I was as close as the CAP would allow.

Hi all!
Wow fantastic shoots!!!
I would love to see more unprocessed 100% crops tho... would be easier to compare quality of the lenses that way.
I just bought a 100-400IS.. but im not happy with the result. Somethings up with the lens and it produces very usharp pictures =/
I was hoping that the zoom would be close in sharpness to my 400 5.6L but that wasnt the case.
So i have send my lens in for a check.

Anyway. Heres a hard Post processed 100-400IS shoot.
