Lichens (first post *fixed*)

Please give me your opinions for improvement on the following two pictures. I am having a hard time deciding which one I like the best.

I think I like #2, but it's hard to tell as I have to scroll to see the whole thing at once.

i like the #2. The upward angle is great. A lot of midtones. The isnt a lot of DOF, but the center is nice a clear.

I liked #1 better. I think its because #2 looks a little overexposed.

Lichens are something I would like to see with vibrant color. Otherwise i like the subject.

Thanks for the input guys, I perfer the second one, I think. I generally like to see lichens in beautiful colors as well, this particular one had a very interesting shape and density, but was a very dull grey color with no colored highlights. I wanted to try my hand at some b&w so I thought it made an interesting comp with the shades of grey in the folds. In retrospect I should have come up a few stops to catch a larger area of #2 in focus. Of well too long of a hike to go back.

Did you try to only make the background b/w and leave the lichen with some colour?

Thanks for the tip I will try that, only as stated earlier the lichen almost had no color that is why I decided to use the B&W. My PS skills are slim but I will try it as a learning experience and see how they come out.
