i took this pic in color but had to convert to B&W to get the large print size i wanted. my lab of choice only prints color at 8.5" wide. i can print 13" wide in B&W and was able to fill a whole sheet of 13x19 paper with awesome clarity. i'll just have to pay to get a large color print made i guess. which do you guys think is a stronger image? i like the black and white more, but is there anything i could do to the color one to make it better?

I looked at the original 'posted size' of the B&W version, & I just don't get the same feeling of depth from it. Maybe it would look different in print form, but it's not doing it for me.

That is weird, the color definitely has more depth to it. Not sure why. You
have done a good job with the B+W conversion, but it still is missing that
depth somehow.

I'd agree with that.

i got a similar comment to these on photo.net. i'm trying to figure out what it is that makes the depth of the pic so weird. i think i need more tonality in the canyon.

Try comparing images of the same size. It might be the reduced image size that makes the difference. The black and white is really nice, but the smaller size seems too restrictive on the detail.

err... are you responding to my initial post? i'm a little confused. the images are the same size if you click on them :?:
i can print the B&W twice the size of the color so there's no detail restriction there.

In my opinion, I would go with the color for your scene. It appears to have more depth which gives the photo more interest. In either case, I would lose the photographer's (or fence or sign post) shadow in the right foreground. Very distracting.
Sometimes B&W works better. For instance the comparison below.

The color version is better IMHO. MUCH better!

I would have to say the color version as well. One item that i noticed in comparing both images (at the same size), is the detail of the distant mountains is lost in the B&W image.

Co CO CO COLOR all the WAY!!!!
Do yourself a favor and remove the black and white version.

You lose so much on the BW. The moody clouds, the orange mountains.............
SUCH A GREAT SHOT!!!
