What is your favorite macro set up? i am using my 300D with the Tamron 28-75 2.8 and extension tube, and am not too thrilled with my results so far. Images seem to be pretty soft. http://photos.photosig.com/photos/09/97/1279709-483848ad93800b82.jpg

How is the Tamron without the tube? This is supposed to be a pretty good lens I believe, and sharp. Tubes will not make an image go soft. But macro's limited depth of field will make it tougher to get a properly focused image.
When I have time and I'm really concerned I use a Sigma 105mm Macro lens on a Velbon Macro Slider. It's still pretty difficult on the 10D to judge accurate focus though, but a lot of light helps.
Other than then I do macro with a 70-200 and 100-400 with tubes and/or a 500D. Depending on the situation those are either handheld or simple tripod mount (ie; no Velbon) or handheld since I rarely approach 1:1 with these rigs.
I often also use my Sigma handheld at 1:1. It's tricky to get used to, but it can be done. After practicing for a while I get about 85-90% of my handheld 1:1 shots in proper focus.

I shoot a lot of macro in my dental laboratory and outside hobby activities. I have many friends with various macro systems, but nothing they have is as good as my 100mm F2.8 with the MT24 flash setup! Good luck. :D

I don't take many macro shots.. But I have a 500D close up lens that I screw on my Canon EF 100-300 when I need macro capability..
It works pretty good...

I've had good results using the 100 2.8 on my 10D. My Tamron 28-75 is a great lens but it doesn't come close to the 100 2.8 for macro work.

I've been pondering that myself....

I use a Sigma 105mm Macro which I find is VERY useful.
Here's some shots from it. Mind you, both of these bugs are the same size... about half the size of your pinky fingernail. I'd say 3mm long... TINY
Oh, and the full size images are razor sharp, this lense is very very nice.
Forgot to add... both those are full frame images. I also use the Novoflex focusing rack, which is ESSENTIAL.
