The Champ Boat series is coming to Toledo OH in august and I wanted to be prepared with expert advise.

I have a Drebel and Sigma 70-300 F4-5.6 for the job. Wish I had something a little faster. Maybe I'll have to talk to the guy at my local photographic shop and see if they hire lenses out.

This is the course, nothing is too far from the river banks.

Tips and Advice please

Rent the 70-200 f4..........or the 2.8 IS version.

Unfortunately for the Rebel, you only get AI servo on sports mode. I would suggest using that to track those boats. And on the lens, make sure you switch the focusing distance to the one that starts from 3-infinity (on the f4 version).........you will achieve a faster focus lock on your subjects.

I don't know if your sigma lens has HSM........but a Canon L lens with USM will focus much faster.

Hope this helps.

BTW, I use these same settings in shooting birds in flight.
