Scanning film to digital

I have a few negatives and slides (from what seems like a previous lifetime) and would like to have them scanned to digital.

Is there a preferred process or format? (I'll be taking them to a lab).

I don't know, but it is worth finding out about. I have tried a couple of different labs and the difference in quality between them was significant.
