I've two friends with it for a 5D. Both seem relatively happy. It's big and almost feels like a sawed off coffee can. AF is silent due to the HSM but slow.
Photodo and popphoto have tests of it. If you look around, sometimes you can find the newer version for just over $200 via cameta at Amazon. Make sure it's the second generation though. I hear the first generation one wasn't that great.

Cameta on eBay is selling them for $240.
When I can finally sell the 17-85, I am considering this lens to keep me in the WA loop. So, I'll be watching this thread closely for images and reviews.
Thanks Mr. Clean for getting the images, and review, rolling on this lens.

Well, it turned out my copy front focused upon more critical review. Exchanged for a new one and the same problem exists on my Mark IIn and my brothers 40D.
I can't, in good conscience, recommend this. Especially when the better Tamron 17-35 is only 30 dollars more.

Unfortunately, it's discontinued, so if you'd ever want to get one, the used market is the only place to go.
BTW...I've done some pretty fun HDR with it, too. I know the process doesn't really show off the lens per se, but I thought I'd throw out a couple of images just for kicks and giggles, to at least show that it's being used.

I really like your HDR's...and I love the result folks get with this lens. Bummer that Sigma chose to D/C this one...but USED is OK by me. I bought a used copy of the 24-60mm and now Sigma D/C'd that one too..
BTW, like I said nice HDR's...learning that technique is on my must do list. The bridge shot is very nice but the bull is a super effect. Thanks for posting them!
sagray

Thanks. Yes, it's a great technique when it's done right. Unfortunately, there are many ugly HDR images out in the world. Hopefully I can continue to do justice to the process.

I agree, in my reading about HDR I have run across some works that did not exactly "blow my skirt up" so to speak. But to someone they might be perfect is what I remind myself.
For now I have found a few freeware apps to try when i get around to it...and have smoe questions I will post over in the HDR discussions forum.

I've actually got this lens. I bought it for a specific shoot maybe ten years ago? Seems it served the purpose in getting the shots the way I wanted them, and seemed to be OK in the sharpness department too. Sorry, dont have any examples though. The last time I used it I was still shooting film.
I may have to dig it out and try it on my 5D. No worries about hitting the mirror, as it (mirror) has already been shaved to clear certain manual focus lenses. ;)

I bought this lens in 2000 for a film camera. After a long hiatus from photography I ended up with a 7D last fall but dismissed this lens because of the crop factor - it wasn't as wide as I was used to with my film SLR and I had all that negative crop factor talk stuck in my head. So I put it away and ignored it thinking I'd get around to selling it (see sig). But recently I thought I'd play around with it and must admit I like the results. It's sharp, decent with colour and focuses decently fast enough. Here are some examples from a recent trip to Niagara:

Think I will resurrect this thread. Just got this lens on Friday, spent a few hours trying it out, then used it for a wedding I shot on Saturday (BAD IDEA!). Got most of the stuff done with a reliable 70-200, but I learned some hard lessons with the 17-35.
1. It is sharp wide open, but only in the center or when you are focusing on something really, really close.
2. It must be stopped down to f/11 or so for group photos since the edges get very soft...actually anything out of the center gets soft at longer focus distances unless stopped down a lot. But, it does get exceptionally sharp.
3. I will only use this lens in the future for close up detail shots (does exceptionally well), landscapes and the rare instances I don't have enough room to get a group shot with a telephoto.
Here is one sample.
