Comments and criticism welcome. This is a picture of my 6 year old daughter out picking apples this afternoon.

That's a nice shot of a very pretty girl in a tranquil pose.
The shiny leaves tend to distract from the effect (at least IMO). A polarizing filter will remove most if not all of the reflections from foliage without mucking up your primary subject.
I think the composition is good.

You've certainly got a pretty little model to practice your portrait technique on.
As for the photo, it leaves me wondering what she's looking at/doing. That's distracting, IMHO. I'd prefer to see a pose used in conjunction with the setting or other objects (favorite pet, doll, etc) that elaborate on her as a person. You know, tell the story... If you do, I bet the photo will be of much more value to your family down the road. My 02, YMMV.

Actually leaving I'll disagree, having mystery or leaving open to viewer imagination is a good thing sometimes. I actually like the setup for the photo, her face needs some fill flash, and the leaves in the background I agree are distracting. In post process I would warm the photo up a little bit.

If you didn't tell me, I wouldn't have know she was there to pick apples. Perhaps have her hold and inspect the apple for worms.
I would also put her hair behind her ears because the hair is taking over half of her face.
You also have reflections on the leaves. Did you try using a polarizing filter to remove it?
