View Full Version : Is it just me... or is this place getting Rude?

Maybe I'm just imagining it .. or maybe I've just spent too much time lately in the 'Equipment Talk' forums... but there seem to me a few members round here (I'm sure they know who they are ;)) who have lost, forgotten or plain never had the art of common courtesy.

There are still many here (thank goodness) who can hold a decent debate without rudeness or ignorance... mostly longstanding POTN members (again I'm sure we all know who they are :)) but also, some newcomers..good on you.

But, come on people, this is a broad church, let's have the discussion, but give people their views without dismissing them as 'wrong' and have the common courtesy to be civil and at least thank people who bother to put in hours of effort to try and show us something....

Now... flame away ;)

PS.. Please remember too this is a worldwide forum .... :)

I think its just the usual rush of new people that show up when ever an exciting new product is released.
Give it a couple of months and those who are here for a quick question will have moved on, and those who are more interested in photography will stay around and hopefully add something positive to the forum.

Of course there is always going to be the constant battle amongst the pixel peepers and the "artists"

True Moppie, but some of the people I'm talking about are no noobs!

POTN always had a reputation as being a friendly and welcoming place.....you get a bit of banter and teasing but that's part of the fun :) I know it's a lot bigger now.. but no reason why we can't work to keep it that way...

I agree - 100%

In general I find POTN is very polite and good-natured, esp. compared to a lot of online forums!

However, I agree that there are a few members out there that forget:

- what is was like when they started out in photography
- that opinions are just that (i.e. not fact) and everyone is entitled to one

I think you will see an increase in rudeness as POTN's popularity grows. I remember in the early days imdb used to be a fantastic site for any cinema/film buff but now it is crowded with people flaming each other, trolls and people bashing/defending the USA.

To paraphrase something (and it is a sad testament to the changes)

If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the lens/eos forums.

I must admit I hardly visit them now, and when I do I generally leave shaking my head :-(

I think I know what you mean, but sometimes the Ken Rockwells of this world give it a little colour ;)

I joined POTN because of its friendly banter.
It makes even the most technical explanation entertaining to read. :)

I guess as it grows we just have to work a little harder to keep it a friendly and welcoming place :)

Very true... I tend to stay in the Sharing (Photos and know how) sections... but it's a shame if some parts are no go areas because its becoming like dpreview in there ;)

i left here for quite some time because I felt the atmosphere had degraded some.
It was not the POTN I was accustomed too. It seems in my absence some normality has return.

People are entitled to opinions and people should respect others for that right.

Pekka,

Thanks for diving in.. I'm not really talking about that sort of thing... more a general view that some (only some) here seem to have lost the art of decent human intercourse via the internet. I'm talking about simple please and thank you mentality that my 2yo son does better than some around here...

Moppie had it right.. it's incumbent on those of us who value what brought us to POTN to work hard to retain that ethos... that you set the ground rules for when you formed this place Pekka :)

(PS I know the Mods are aware of the threads that prompetd me to start this ;))

I could (I'm not going to) name those who I think need a lesson in courtesy and those who can hold a meaningful debate on exactly the same issue without it turning into a slanging match ;)

Moppie

.............seem to have lost the art of decent human intercourse via the internet...........

I'v never had much luck with that online to be honest, always preferred it to be carried out in real life.............:lol::lol::lol:

The culture in a forum is driven by 3 types of people:

Its owner, who lays down the rules and sets the tone.
Its moderators, who enforce those rules, and can enforce a tone.
And, most importantly, its established members who's larger numbers, high post counts and familiarity with the subject matter often have the most input into a forum. They are the one's who great the new members, who provide the bulk of the technical information, and who's behavior ultimately influences the tone set by the owner and the moderators.
If there is any conflict between those 3 groups, then a forum will collapse into chaos very quickly.
Conflict with in, and between the 1st two groups is of course a major problem, but not something I think POTN has to worry about.
Conflict with in the established members is however, not necessarily a bad thing, as long its carried out in a civilized manner.
It provides the forum with a variety of differing view points, ultimately expands its knowledge base and ensures there is always some debate going on somewhere.
With out that conflict the forum simply becomes a friendly chat room where a small number of people who know and like each other sit around thier computers engaging in small talk.

Of course the conflict is never an excuse to be rude to anyone else, and it's never an excuse to be nasty to a new member, especially if they are new to forums.

Honestly, I don't expect decent behavior on the internet. I've rarely seen it over the years. I'm more an "expect the worst, and be surprised with the best" kinda guy, and in most all things. Granted, there's some really great contributors on here, and I'm sure we all appreciate them. I think I'm doing loads better these days, although I'll be the first (well ok, maybe not  ) to say that I'm a testy one, but for the most part, I think I'm pretty friendly.

I try not to let bad behavior bother me...really won't do you any good.

I have only been here since Dec but I already know a few names that I can almost expect some dumb comments from when I see their name in a post. I don't know why people have to post stupid crap that is just their opinion and is pointless for the most part.

I have noticed that things have started to heat up a bit since all the 40D rumor posts started and its continued since the release of the 40D.

Its still better than most other forums I visit though.

This is a great forum, especially when you compare it to places like dpreview and FM....sure we have the occasional ill mannered lout, but most times they just get ignored and business carries on. There has been a change in tone in the camera and lens sections that makes it less than appealing, but I still try to find the threads where I can actually give a person some advice or input that might be of some value to them.

The biggest concern is new people getting so turned off by the sarcastic and rude behavior that they just walk away from here and don't come back...hate to see that happen.

EOSAddict,

I have thought the same also. There have been many times that I came across rude posts in certain threads and have even had an encounter once my self where the other individual would misread what I would post and argue a different thing. I was confused and frustrated. But all I did was walk away....I would never think of leaving POTN because of some argument that cannot be debated nicely. On a second note, isn't there an 'ignore member' button? I guess people could use them. I would and have thought about it before....but my good got me....I figured that if I 'ignore' the person with the button, I may not get to see the posts that they actually would provide useful and helpful information.

There reaches a point where a member of a forum will answer the same quesitons every day for week, then give up and not bother anymore.

Then a question comes and you offer your answer, not your opinion, the atucal answer and the person will aask say 4 or 4 more times and you have provided said answer. I've seen members get frustrated over this any EVERY forum.

New users come here and ask the usual "new season" tech questions and it gets tiresome. The measurebating on this forum and the backing it up with worthless data or butt-o-meter results is astounding.

Does it rile some? sure does? Does it make some see rudeness from both sides - the asked and answered? Yes.

You can always change the channel.

As for sugar coating it? You can dress stuff up all you want or leave it naked, %99 of the time it's still the same freakin' info. Courtesy? Sure we could all be a bit more courteous.

But I will say this, of all the forums I've been on of this size, this is by far the most civil and adult I have ever seen.

Just say no to sugar coating it - give 'em the facts. I love you too Gracie ;)

This forum really isn't too bad. If someone p*isses me off, I just hit the red triangle. In contrast, I went to Dpreview one time, and never returned. All the juvenile bickering just made my head hurt.

Another very good forum in which I'm becoming more actively involved in the Digital Wedding Forum Pro. It's very civilized and quite heavily moderated to maintain the overall climate of professionalism. Well worth the membership fee.

Another point, many people are unaware of the ignore feature. If rude or synaptically inept people make your POTN experience an unpleaasnat one, simply add them to your ignore list.

Not unlike deleting channels on the telly and you never have to deal with the shopping channel or the country music channel ever again.

The shopping channels, the country channels and the golf channel evaporated from mine.

As for the ignore button on here...I find it easier to use my internal ignore button. When I find a post or poster that I don't like I just stop reading and make a decision about the necessity to report the post or to just move on to greener pastures.

Tha'ts fine for casual disgust, but when someone comes after you and your opinion and you ARE correct, it's hard to not defend yourself correct?

It's a tool, use it as you see fit. I have a couple of people on mine and they don't post anymore, so it served its purpose for me.

So back on topic about rudeness and not the ignore button:

This place is what we make of it. If it's getting rude you don't leave you try and make it better. Correct?

Personal attacks have no place on this forum and shouldn't be tolerated at any level.

I know what you are saying about defending yourself Jason. Sometimes it becomes a point of personal honor and dignity. It really sucks that a situation could ever get that far, but I have seen it on a few occasions.

I do agree that using the ignore feature certainly beats leaving the forum. And we all have an obligation as members to try to make this a better place. Those folks not interested in doing so, should just move along.

There are two kinds of cirticisim: constructive and destructive. In the two years I have been a member here I have seen plenty of both...and been the recipient of both.

Constructive: Your WB is off and your pictures suffer for it. See pages x to y in your camera manual for a discussion on WB and how to adjust it.

Destructive: You call these photos? They are sanpshots at best! Don't quit your day job as you don't have a chance to be a photographer.

I think a lot of newcomers to POTN are quickly driven away be destructive criticisim they recieve; or they become lurkers and are afraid to post and get blown away by some old timer looking to put another notch on his/her keyboard.

I come here to learn and to share. I am not afraid to post to to take my lumps if the comments are fair. I have learned to ignore some folks and some comments as it is just not worth the aggravation to reply and risk a "flame" contest.

I will say this...POTN is the best I have found on the net to pursue my inteest in Canon photography.

People who don't want to waste their time answering what they consider stupid questions, should not waste their time writing rude answers. If the question is stupid, then that should normally mean that the answer is easy. Hence, a lot of other people, with a bit better patience will be able to answer it.

What really makes me mad, is when someone starts their answer with a "Sigh..." I think it's better to shut up than to try to intimidate or belittle the person who answered the question - or had a view that wasn't 100% accepted.

When people ask a question, get a good link and then ignores the link because they want the bottom line pre-chewed, then it might be ok to tell them to do their homework. People who don't know what to search for, or comes back and complains that they didn't understand something shouldn't be ridiculed or humiliated.

Haha, I think you were born an a$$hole so its not your fault. :p (I always find the need to leave some sort of smiley at the end of everyone of my post. If you leave a smiley everyone knows your trying to be nice)

I am really not bothered by rude comments so im happy as can be. But, when i do see a nasty or rude remark I know that someone is probally going to be offended. So usually I just try to let the rude poster know that what they said can be offensive and hope it convinces them to not be as rude. Instead of just ignoring them i try to help and make them a valued part of POTN.

But there is also the person who is so extremely sensitive that they consider any criticism or negative comments to be an attack. When usually the commenter has no idea he is offending the original poster. So now the OP thinks they ae being attacked so they respond with a rude comment and it starts a war thread. What i try to do whenever im giving criticism or comments is make sure that the person understands im trying to be helpful by adding smilies and all that fluff cr@p. I dont like to do this, im pretty straight forward but over the internet it is difficult to convey your tone. So i add all the fluff to keep the peace. Of cource when i come to someone who i know can handle it i am blunt (not as blunt as tim). Unfortunately the people who I know who can handle it are great photographers and all i can say is "wow, great lighting and composition etc. etc." So yea there are rude people on this forum, but there is going to be rude people everywere on the internet and in life. I just deal with it and try to make them realise how rude they are being (not cdifoto he is a lost cause :D ( note the use of the smiley to convey i am kidding)) and hope they will add to POTN.

If you aren't comfortable reporting a post, you can always PM a Mod to help handle it. We have lots of members who do that and remain anonymous while the culprit is brought to the stocks:D

Hmm, quite a few posts already.
Yes, I too have noticed more rude posts, mainly in the camera and lens section. Yes there are some members I see and expect rude posts from them.

I think some use the forum to bicker over trivial stuff but also present their view in a very rude manner, either a personal attack post or rude like "read the manual" type of an answer.

I didn't know that warning sign link by the Avatar, but will now use it if the post doesn't address the OP's question and is just made to make personal attacks on a poster.

Compared to usenet, this place is Heaven.

Because it's public (but moderated) and worldwide, you can't help but get the occasional crank but overall, it's a breath of fresh air.

With the proliferation of the internet, the average computer-user age trending downward and a US Presidential election coming up in a year and a half, usenet has become absolutely untenable. Big props to the Moderators and long-time users here (which I certainly am not...) for keeping POTN as focused as is humanly and internet-idly (<--- a word?) focused as possible. 8)

There are usually 2 types of event that takes place.
Missunderstandings
VDU warrior syndrome.

EOSAddict, we have experienced the first type of event, recognised and repaired.

The second is type is usually due to someone having very tiny little peanut sized balls in life, internet forums gives them a way to 'be a big guy' without getting their nose or other tender bones broken.
The comments of ' I tell it like it is' usually means one of 2 things.

2. The tiny balls syndrome

My conclusions on this stem from the fact of not being spoken to rudely or flipantly to my face but on forums it happens often.

I agree with what you are saying for the most part. Problem with opinions is that not only do we have them, as already been mentioned, we also get personal with them. I think some of us get criticized for having an opinion and because it is so personal, people tend to knee-jerk react and start attacking the poster on a different level. I have no problems with a heated debate, after all this is how we learn and develop varying opinions. But when people get personal and start attacking the poster ( which I think is stupid since we really don't know each other from Adam) is when the debate becomes a fight. I think as long as the argument stays within the confides of the issue being debated rather than comments directly at the poster, all's well. I have seen people here, who thought they were controlling the situation or fixing the issue by attacking the poster of the unpopular opinion directly, then the masses start hitting the poster. I don't think it is healthy for any board for its members to feel intimidated by the posters holding the popular opinions, to hinder such opinion from being expressed.

With that...LOL Macro settings for those who don't know what they are, is nothing but a marketing strategy that lens manufacturers add as a feature on the lens. A true macro will give you 1:1 images at close focusing distances, which leaves the EF 50mm Macro for debate, but with a life-size converter it is 1:1. Funny thing is that for the money of the 50mm and the converter, (providing you have a crop body) you can get the EF-S 60mm Macro which is 1:1 out the box or if you have a FF or 1.3x body, you can get the super sharp Sigma 70mm Macro for less than the 50mm and life-size converter.

People get emotional, and the more we can figure that out and accept it, the more we will be able to tolerate the whines about new products and how Noink is now better than Canon remarks. I find it amusing really, that adults will whine and fight over brand names, if we can't get over the Canon/Nikon thing, how can we ever expect to accept each other in peace?

PWN2, I have had a lot of dealings with these less than honest sales people, one told me that digital cameras "extend" the reach of a lens, actually changing the FL, instead of merely changing the FOV, giving it the appearance that the lens is longer. When I tried to point that out to them, it merely fell on deaf ears and proceeded to try to get me to pay $750 for a 150-500mm Sigma. Offering that it was a great deal! LOL

Polaroid was the 70's answer to digital pictures nowadays. Instant gratification! Albeit, low quality, low resolution, very soft and no PP. Well, no one really owned a computer that would even think of PP at that time, anyway!

"Meet the Swinger, the Polaroid Swinger...
It's more than a camera, it's almost alive,
It's only 19 dollars and 95.....................

Swing it up, it says yes
Take the shot, pull it out,
Count it down, zip it off...................."
