right got my 40d - took some photos... now my RAW images will not open - (unless i use the cr@p canon bundle - digital photo pro)

Is this my only choice or do i have to want for the software companies to play catch up ??

Wait for the catch up or use DPP!

I believe there is a post round here saying the ACR and LR update (LR 1.2) for 40D will be out next week. I also understand the latest Bibble can do 40D RAWs.

Yeah, you'll have to wait. That's what early adopters of new camera models have always had to do. (Camera makers don't exactly go out of their way to share info with Adobe before Camera's release... or AFTER its release for that matter.)

Actually I don't find DPP that bad, but I understand not wanting to process there, and then re-process in ACR once its released. Pro's have no choice, however... except for use a supported model until ACR is updated.

Not sure why you wouldn't want to use the Canon software to convert your Canon Raw files......

because programs like lighroom blow it away, its far easier andd has way more options

I had not used the canon software since getting lightroom... well that was until a couple nights ago when I got the 40D

Next week from 40D RAW support in Lightroom. Woohoo, That way I can just keep shooting in RAW+JPEG and I'm good to go.

Hope the rumour is true.

I love LR for its ease of use, but if I do a side by side comparison between DPP & LR then the shot processed in DPP always comes out looking better.

Still, I persist with LR - roll on v1.2!

I have been told by Color Science that i2e works with 40D raw files, But I don't have a 40D yet....
Email me a raw file and I will give it a try.

I just got off the phone with a tech at Adobe and although I'm not using LR i do have CS3 and asked him is there a upgrade available? They have this general answer when a upgrade becomes avail. the software will do an auto update for any new plugin. I was like ok this is what I want to know..... Is there an update for CS3 in the works to read the raw Files for my 40D he said "No"

Now I just got this software like 2 weeks ago and I'm not happy at all. I know patience but geez get with the program Adobe

How long has the 40D been out? 1 week? 2 maybe? And you want Adobe to "get with the program". Man we have gotten unpatient. Remember that Adobe will be upgrading 4 programs that can read RAW files while others only have one. Sure LR and CS3 use the same engine but that doesn't mean they are identical.

Something I read last week said it is likely to be out Thursday.

Elsewhere on here it's been posted that it's out this week.. but have some patience with Adobe et al. They have to completely reverse engineer the RAW format and make it work in ACR with NO help from Canon. They probably only got their first 40D the same time some people here did.

It would be great if it was out Thursday. I'm away on holiday on Friday to Boston, Cape Cod and New York and I'll be taking my 40D with me but it's a bit of a bummer not being able to open my RAW photos in Lightroom or PS-CS2 yet.

iView Media Pro 3.1.2 does seem to be able to display the photo, not too sure how, perhaps some embedded JPEG preview?

I'm loathe to shoot RAW + JPEG as I find having two of each photo a bit confusing sometimes

Edit to add: The Canon software seems a bit flakey on my Mac Powerbook and often just closes for no apparent reason. I tried it once when I had the 300D and didn't really like it. I tried it last night and still don't really like it. I have downloaded the latest Bibble, which I'd paid for ages ago when I was trying RAW converters, but I do prefer Lightroom and ACR / Photoshop these days.

Cant you just export you files as .tiff's from DPP and then use PS?

For those of us without internet on our main computers, what's the best recommendation to download these updates? I have Photoshop CS2 right now and plan on getting Lightroom.

Probably, but as I said, the Canon software seems flakey on my Mac Powerbook and often just closes for no apparent reason. It's a bit frustrating to use it if at any second it's just going to pack in. It's the only software that I have on my Powerbook than seems to have that problem.

I'll probably just shoot RAW anway and process it when I get back, or maybe download ACR if I can get net access on the trip

I can't wait! I am so used to using ACR that DPP hurts my workflow. I've been trying to use it all week, but it just doesn't work well for me :-(

You'll be able to download the update file as a standalone file on your internet machine, and then transfer that to your main computers by local area network or cd/dvd.

Install DPP. It's a nice RAW viewer. I've used it a few times to convert RAW files when I just couldn't get pictures to look right while adjusting setting with ACR.

There are some new features being added to the DPP for the 40D and more features for when the 1Ds3 ships. Hopefully Canon will give 30D and 5D users upgrade versions to download for them.

DPP here. It's pretty-much the only software I use.

The only thing I use Photoshop for is straightening horizons - thankfully not something I have to do very often, and hardly ever with my own shots.

DPP has everything else I need.

Yes, I did try it and it doesn't work either.
Nowadays I'm shooting RAW+Medium fine and and PP'ing the JPEGs in LR or CS3 and since I don't have any paid jobs for the next 3 weeks, I figured I would just enjoy and get familiar with the 40D.
Hopefully the LR update will be out soon!
