I have just purchased the Canon 17-40mm L USM lens.
Will be testing it out shortly, but I'm 100% sure I will be very happy with it.
I have one question, the manual make reference to a gelatin filter holder at the rear of the lens, what the heck is a GELATIN FILTER ?

what the heck is a GELATIN FILTER ?
Used primarily in film photography to change the color of light. The gelatin filter is like a piece of film that you slide into the filter slot at the back of the lens. With digital, there is little need for them as you can have much more control via post processing.
For a bit more info see:

i have the 17-40, i don't see a rear filter holder on it. if you want to use a filter, put it on front (77mm).

Its those two clips and a little square white shape. The shape shows how big a piece of gelatin film to put in the clips. This is literally a piece of coloured plastic. So basicaly it makes your pictures go soft and funny coloured. Ideal if you like soft, odd coloured images, but not much use for the rest of us.

WOW, I never even knew or cared what that was for on my 17-40. Just had a look and sure enough ... it's there! :D
Now I'm off to find out which color filters for which effect and how they work with different films.
Thanks!
Just goes to show, it's important to read ALl the threads in here. Never know when you will learn something new, and for me ... that is much of the time ...
BTW, if you know of a website with info on gel filters, it would be mucho appreciated!

The mount on the lens will take 3 filters at a time, giving you even more options in combination for film.
Also, info on gelatin filters can be found at:

As Dieselgirl says, you will love the lens. Trouble is once you get a taste of the L lenses you just have to get more - a problem I now have :D - probably the 70-200 2.8L

The next time you order something from B&H, add this (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=WishList.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=45189&is=REG) to your cart. It's Rosco's gel sampler swatchbook with hundreds of gels. It's FREE (well, technically $.01). While I use it to gel my flash, you can trim each gel to fit in the rear filter holder. Knock yourself out.

Oh yeah, Brian!
See how you feel when your checking account is empty and that next paycheck can be used to pay the bills or buy another "L" lens. You'll be talking to yourself saying "Why did I listen to those people?" but you'll order the "L" lens anyway ... You'll see!
  give into it ... it's inevitable!
