Does anyone know what the limit is for me taking my Camera bag to New York. Basically it will be quite large and with laptop. Was thinking of getting the Lowepro AW300

Call your airline, and check the airport web site too. For cabin baggage, you might be struggling on weight if not size.

UK restrictions are on the Department for Transport web site here (http://www.dft.gov.uk/transportforyou/airtravel/airportsecurity/).
Note that DfT specifies a maximum size for carry-on bags (56x45x25cm) but not a maximum weight. However airlines are free to specify a smaller maximum size and/or a maximum weight. Some do, and the results can be very variable.
For example :
- BA allows the full 56x45x25 size and says you must be able to lift the bag into an overhead locker
- American says the maximum dimensions must sum to no more than 114cm (smaller than the DfT requirement, since 56+45+25=126) and the weight limit is 18kg
- Virgin Atlantic specifies a maximum size of only 56x36x23 and a ridiculous weight limit of only 6kg
Check with your airline. Remember also that, when you are flying from the UK, you must fit everything you carry onto the plane into that one bag.
