Ok i am not a newb with computers but i have been trying to retreive these photos for a while and i have retrieved them all but they are scrambled and i saved 52 photos out of a 171. Now the snapshot above is what the rest of them look like. When they were first added into picasa or i preview them they are complete pictures but as it refreshes (automatically) it changes them back to what you see there. I am wondering how i can get them all to stay full pictures long enough so i can export them as they should be.

I have tryed alot of picture recovery programs atleast 6 or so. What do you guys think i can do. Is there a way i can stop the computer from refreshing the pics as soon as they are added or what?

Please i really need these photos. Thanks for your help:D

I'm going to guess that the files are all corrupt, either missing/incorrect byte or two in a header about content, possibly bad EOF......

Someone else may have a better idea, but I'd try a file conversion utility to move them from one format to another, see what happens.

Have any suggestions on that as far as a utility goes? The thing that burns me though is when i first add them to picasa or view them for the first time they all appear full and complete but as soon as it sits there for a few seconds or so it refreshes all of the images and then they go back to what they look like up in the little pic in my first post. If i could stop it from refreshing that would be awesome. Thanx for your reply.

Did you delete the photos from their original folders in your computer?
I am almost sure that Picasa creates its database without moving the photos. If you deleted them only from Picasa, hopefully the original files must be still there. I suggest using Windows Explorer to find them.

You can tell Picasa which folders to scan:
Adjust which photos and folders appear. Only folders that Picasa is set to scan appear in this collection. To modify what folders on disk Picasa scans for photos, select “Folder Manager” on the “Tools” menu. Use the settings there to select or de-select the folders Picasa scans, choosing from these options: “Scan Once,” “Remove From Picasa” and “Scan Always.”

You can read the complete Picasa Help online here:

http://picasa.google.com/support/

I hope it helps
Good luck

Where did you delete them? You mean on the computer itself and that's where you recovered?

Any chance you can restore them from the memory card? If you haven't overwritten them in the camera then you can recover those easily too and then recopy them to the pc. Maybe do a copy somewhere first and check them out outside of Picasa in case Picasa's index is creating the issue.

I've had some luck with this program in a situation that appears similar to what you have...

They were deleted or formatted off of my camera and i recovered them from the memory disk. Picasa isnt doing it as far as i know, It does not matter where i put the pictures whether i just look at them in the folder by themselves or through picasa. I think the hex file index is messed up (if that is what it is called). I will try that snapfiles and see what happens.

What kind of memory card do you have? The card companies have recovery discs for their cards usually. The data, even though it has been formatted is still on the card.

Yeah i know i recovered the pics off of the card but i think the file system got re written and the computer doesnt know where the pictures begin and end. That is what i personally think is the problem with the images. Just wondering how you would go about fixing the file system if that is possible. I know next to nothing about hex editing but i heard you can repair the files that way? What do you guys think?

Data Doctor recovery for digital Images is the winner. It sees all of the files regardless of the file system structure and it appears that it will recover all of the images. I will buy it and report back.

Did you use the card at all since you took those pictures? It sounds like parts of the actual file segments have been overwritten on the card, maybe just not the headers portions. I'm beginning to think you won't be able to recover them intact.

If some of what you've downloaded still contain a partial image of something you'd like to keep though, you can crop the garbage portion out and resave it.

Even if you don't succeed now, don't destroy the data if any of the pictures are important to you. There likely will be software, eventually, that can do it.

Yeah thanks i used that program and it shows me little tiny 160x100 intact photos that do me no good. Yeah i won't format the card it is really small so i will just buy a new one. The big ones are still scrambled.

Yeah the card had 2 pictures taken on it after the fact. I did'nt do it btw.

I wonder if there is a hex editor out there that i could mess around with and maybe try and re write the headers. Probably make an image of the card so i dont destroy the data on the real card. Let me know if you know of any good hex editors out there that might be good for my needs. Thanx for your continued help. :D
