View Full Version : Need help with the size of my photos (Digital Rebel)

Hello to everyone, first of all. I'm 16 years old and my dad purchased a Digital Rebel a while back, but since he barely uses it, I can pretty much consider it mine. I don't know too much about it's abilities, but I guess that's why I'm here.

I like to take pics of cars, mostly, as they're my hobby. I post them on several car forums I am a member of.

My problem is that the photos aren't in desktop proportion when I upload them. With my other camera (Olympus C-50), the photos would be 1600x1200 or 1024x768 ( ratio of 4x3) when shrunk, but when I shrink the pictures I upload from the Rebel, they come out to something like 1800x1200.

It's inconvenient for me to change the proportions each and every pictures I upload (and very time consuming), so I was wondering if there was a way for the Rebel to automatically take pictures in the 4:3 ratio, so they will come out to 1600x1200 when resized. Is it possible to change this?

Thanks for any help.

You can't make such a modification in the camera. Out of curiosity - why do you need to change the ratio? Maybe we can help if we understand what you are trying to do with the images that you need to make such a change.

Do you want to turn your car into a stretch limo

Seriously, if you resize the pics, you will have some distortion.
I would advise to crop the pictures instead.

Both things (resize and crop) can be done in Photoshop. I think if you write an action, it can process your pictures (also add some USM to them).

Best regards,
Andy

the ratio of the drebel is 3*2 while your screen is 4*3
(3*2 is more used in printing than 4*3...)
one solution is to crop your pic automatically by writing an action in photoshop (if you d'ont know how to do that tell me I'll do it for you and post the action)
but remember if you crop automatically you will not have the choice of what part of your pic to crop... it will crop equally left and right

I know how to resize a group of images with Photoshop, but how do I crop a group?

When I want to use one of my images as wallpaper, I just resize it so that it's 1024 pixels wide and then save it as *image name*-small. If it's a vertical shot I make it 768 pixels tall. It's easy to resize them in Photoshop or Microsoft Picture It, so it's really not much trouble. Of course this is only convenient for making wallpaper, so I don't know how much that helps. :?

I know how to resize a group of images with Photoshop, but how do I crop a group?

First create an action which do crop and resize.
Then create a droplet (Menu File, Automatisation) linked to your action. This will create an .exe file. Place this .exe file on your desktop. All you have to do then is to drag and drop your files on the .exe file.

I like this idea but can't seem to get it to work for me. When I drop a file on it all it does is open photoshop. Doesn't do anything to the photo.

Did you save the file in your action ?

I guess I don't see how to do that. When is asks me to save the file, I have the action I made selected where you select all the options for it. Then I save the file to my desktop.

I didn't save it, but I just did and it still will not do anything but open photoshop up when I drop a photo on it..
