View Full Version : A week, a place... Need help

I want to spend a week anywhere in the United States (Hotel and Car is a must), where I can chill, read, and also go out and take some photos.

So, to make it simpler: If I gave you 7 days anywhere in the US, with a rental, with the objective of taking pics, relax, etc? Where would you go?...

Your answer could be a life saver ;)...

(Oh!, please do tell of whatever place you suggest, the place you'd photograph, or sites of interest).

Thanks :)

Yes! Please! Tell him!

He thinks I don't know he's in my dumpster, but I do, and the neighors are starting to talk. He has to leave! For a week at least.

:p:p

Alaska is always great. Some great photographic opportunities. But if chilling is and objective, any beach is nice (florida or cali.) Not that specific but some ideas at least. :)

I live in Cali, and for work I have over-explored Yosemite, Santa Cruz, and Monterrey. SoCal, I am not sure where. It is usually hectic for me.

Alaska, I had not considered. I might be able to get a plane trip somewhere, a water landing, who knows. That is definitely an option. I even have an island out there (Gravina Island) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravina_Island).

Spent 10 days in Orlando FL, back in April. It was good, but between other drivers, tourists, and Spring Break, I was a bit discouraged. I did get to spend quite a bit of time at the Wildlife Refuge and KSC, and that was fun.

Thanks for the ideas so far, anyone else come up with anything ?...

PS: Lucy- No worries about the dumpster, I have considered some sub-leasing while I am gone, and several people have been bidding. Actually, I am about to post an Ebay auction for it. Starting price is $2000 for a week, and I have about seven interested forum members, errr anonymous parties. ;)... Did your Husband ever buy ammo for the shotgun?.. If so, I gotta get that hole on the side of the dumpster patched before I leave.

This time of year it would be the Adirondacks. The colours will be popping soon, great scenery, good golf. Lots of inns, B&B, hotels, etc. Some good deals on the web. A few :) good restaurants.

Lake Placid is a good place to base out of.

Check hiking and nature trails, gondola up White Face. Many things to do.

INEXPENSIVE!!!

In all seriousness, how about the Appalachian Trail area? It would be beautiful this time of year.

I can second that.

Or if you do it soon, before the rains set in, Puget Sound, especially around the Gig Harbor area is very nice and very photogenic.

How about the Grand Canyon? I have seen some great pictures from there (haven't been yet myself) and Sedona isn't far from there either. Maybe stay in Sedona and take a trip to the Canyon? If you do go to Sedona, try the Pink Jeep Tours (http://www.pinkjeep.com/) I have done the Broken Arrow trail, it was a good time! Slide Rock State park is a big attraction there. ummm Grasshopper Point is a nice little hiking area too. the church in the hillside is nice also. and Oak Creek runs through Sedona also.

Just went over 3k posts.

Yay !!!

Anyhow, where is the Appalachian Trail Deal ?... Sounds easterly, don't it? My geography is a bit cloudy, with chances of rain.

I would go to Colorado Springs. My father lives there and I go visit as often as I can. Many sights to see, plenty of photo ops and gambling down in Cripple Creek ;).

Yes, it runs from the South to the Northeast. You can pickup the trail anywhere along a line stretching from Georgia to Maine.

Uhh, I heard cool things about Georgia. Definitely going to take a look at that. I just like to park my stuff at a hotel somewhere central, and then take one or two days trip somewhere for some good photos.

I am also crazy. I like to call the PDs, and take photos downtown, any action I can find.

Colorado Springs is Tempting. I was at Arvada (North of Denver) a couple of times this year.

Yellowstone I definitely like, last time there I spent over a week, and it's been a good eight years. Will have to check if there is any closeby place to fly into, and then spend time driving and hiking inside the park.

Sedona sounds nice, I once made a Video Game with the golf course there. How's temperatures?... I'd go to vegas, but I am not a gambler, and I have no clue what else is there to see.

Utah, I lived there for a couple of years. Love Zion park, I just don't want to have to see friends from the past. New friends good. Memories from the past, overrated.

One thought I had was to just fly down to NYC, and stay somewhere in Manhattan (Probably crazy expensive) but spend the days chilling and then walking amongst the hundreds of thousands of people. Good press photography, keeps you in your toes.

I'd go to Chicago, but I just got out of a biz trip there this week, so I feel dumb going there in the end. Plus the kid from Home alone is all grown up I hear, so I can't even take a pic by him on the entrance to that house ;)...

Anyhow, keep the advice coming, I feel at least I have some options.

Thanks much to all, by the way. This dump...ster can get a bit to small every once in a while... plus with Lucy's new blind system, is pretty boring.

I am thinking about going to papparazzi some kid in Oklahoma City, he looks a lot like Enrique Iglesias. I might be able to make a few Bucks "Enrique buys property in Oklahoma City" type headline.

Smoky Mountains, but don't stay in the tourist town hotels. You can get a nice secluded cabin (usually called chalets in that part of TN) for $125/night with a full kitchen, fireplace & jaccuzzi on the deck.

A long section of the AT runs through the Smoky Mtn Natl Park. It's a short, scenic drive to NE Georgia (Helen, Dahlonega, Rabun County) and W North Carolina (Asheville's Biltmore House, Blue Ridge Parkway)

Try Portland, OR. Within about an hour you can be at the ocean or in the mountains (including the awe-inspiring Mt. St. Helens). The Columbia River Gorge is close. You can reach the high desert on a day trip. You can shoot urban landscapes. There's a great Japanese garden. Plus, Portland has great food, wine and beer.

Otherwise, I'd choose Moab, UT and do Arches, Canyonlands, etc.

Thanks for the great ideas !... Lots of places, links to check...
I will take a look at these.
Once more mucho merci for everyone, and if new visitors to the thread want to pitch ideas, please feel free.

I might just check into rehab with Lilo.
Do you know if you have to be on drugs to get into rehab?...
Because I have never done drugs, but I could turn myself in, and fake it.
Just thinking aloud I guess.

No one has mentioned Wash. DC, yet. lots of nice monuments to take pics of and lots of good museums to go to. I used to live right outside DC in MD and have been there lots so its nothing to me but some one who has never been should enjoy it. You can also go to Baltimore to the inner harbor or Annapolis for some great photo opportunities. Travel west into the mountains about 1 hour and you have the App. trail as mentioned earlier. Also lots of good civil war battle fields you can visit if you are into that. Going up to the App. trail you could also go to the Antietam battle field and Harpers Ferry. Both great places to visit. Just some thoughts for something different.

i would head to new orleans. the culture, the people, the food, the buildings ( historic) and the surrounding areas are full of history. the spanish moss hanging from the trees. the grave yards. the hotels are fun to stay in ( even when its not mardi grass) you can have yourself some gator nuggets.
there are many beautiful plantations down there.

i know that its heart breaking to go there because of places like the 9th ward. but worth the experience regardless.

OK now that I gave you a great suggestion, I should get first dibs on the dumpster at a reduced weekly rate, Haha! Let me know if you decide to go and I could give you more specifics on where to go since I used to live there. Jon one of the mods could possibly also help in that respect as he lives there now. I could also tell you where not to go as to not get yourself into trouble. Good luck with your decision.

How about the Allegheny National forest, plenty of hiking trails, two hours from Niagra Falls and you don't need a passport yet to drive to the Canadian side, 1 1/2 from the Lake Erie Peninsula, Wineries also within easy distances. Plenty of photo ops.

Well a friend and I took a wee jaunt round the mid-west, starting in Yellowstone and heading down through the states via Vegas and the grand canyon, then over a little east of there was meteor crater.

Now that was a snap-tastic trip!!

I'm with Mark. Since you've beaten down the first two places I'd suggest, Utah (including Lake Powell ) would be next on my list

I second this one, I even have a dumpster picked out for you behind Emeril's Delmonicos restaurant. Food is good and will save on those hotel charges. Parking is free.

That's funny :)... I just graduated from Dumpsters, as I should not be talking about them in these forums. But, I now live in trees. Really interesting change, to be sure.

If I were in Dallas TX, how long would it take me to drive to places like Houston, or San Antonio, Amarillo, Paris... Can they be turned into a day trip, or is it pretty much out of the question?... Just curious. I like nothing about Dallas, though I should take some pics there. But then, I'd love to drive around, maybe even take a quick run into Louisiana.

Anyone think it is doable if I were stationed at a hotel in Dallas ?(or surrounding area, in order to avoid traffic).

The cities in Texas are nice, I like San Antonio and Austin the most. It's all that nothing in between that is a b-tch. Dallas to New Orleans is about ten hours. I can't remember what it is Dallas to Houston but it is long somewhat boring drive.
