Hi,

Ive just joined this forum as Im now an enthusiastic photographer due in large part to my new toy - my Canon Powershot A80.
Where do I start? What a fantastic camera for £189. Ive already had some pleasing results even though Im new to the level of manual control this camera gives. Coming from a naff old Kodak DC3800, this is a dream to use.
I showed my dad some of my better shots, and 5 minutes later he was on the web ordering one for himself!

cheers! :D

Sounds like you're already off to a great start.

Just keep shooting pictures, experimenting, reviewing, and learning from your successes and mistakes. Practice makes perfect... Or at least better.

Read stuff online, and in books.

It's cool that your dad is getting a camera too. Hopefully you'll be able to spend many hours together having fun with your cameras. :)

Welcome!! I switched from a G2 to a A80, dont ask me why. I just wanted something new. BUt I must say that overall I am very happy with my A80. It has some nice features my G2 did not have, although I miss the RAW feature.

Anyway, post some pics some time!!

Cheers

the A80 is an awesome little camera. i've certainly been able to sqeeze every little bit of quality out of it. i shoot in manual mode 95% of the time. check out my site for some of my stuff to see what it's capable of.

Experiment and take photos of everything in all conditions to familarize yourself with the camera. And read up on some articles on composition, learn how to compose photos. You'll soon look at things in a different perspective as you try and compose an image.

You'll appreciate the works of the pros and how they manage to take great photos. But don't be discouraged if your photos don't compare. It takes time and practice...

One cool thing about the camera is that you can take multiple shots of the same photo but using various manual settings and then analyze those photos settings (even a histogram) during playback from the display function. Transfer the photos to your computer so you can see how different settings affect your photo - white balance, aperture, etc do to your photos. The LCD is too small to really analyze it ..
