I'm ordering a custom frame for a 10 x 20 " photo. Is there a rule of thumb for how much matting one should use?

I was going to use 1" visible? thoughts?

Thats an 'odd' sized photo. A 1" mat would be awfully narrow for that size. It depends on proportion of the frame to the image.

I typically would mat a 11 x 14 up to 16 x 20, thus portrait mode 2.5" of mat per side and top slightly less than bottom, so maybe 2.75 and 3.25 or so. It would look really cheap with only 1", IMO.

If you have the picture, go down to the frame store (Micheals, Aaron Bros), and look at their mat samples, see what looks good.
