There are a lot of shops with electronics and computers, especially around Times Square, but I would avoid them if I were you! In almost all of them, there are only rude, pushy salesmen, who don't know anything about the stuff they're selling you. Prices aren't fixed, they'll first give you a price that's way too high - you know, some fools don't think and just pay... :? Or they'll try to rip you off and push you into buying all kinds of stuff you don't want.

One place you absolutely must visit is B&H (http://www.bhphotovideo.com). It's a very large and popular store, close to the post office in Manhattan. They have EVERYTHING you could wish for, good service and no rude and pushy salesmen.

Second the B&H recommendation. As far as the Times Square stores go... if you know what your dealing with it can be fun dickering with these yahoo's and who knows occastionally you can walk away with a deal. Need to really understand what you are talking about and want though.

I was in NY a month ago and stopped in B&H for the first time. Its right down the street from Madison Square Garden.

First off, the place is huge and it was jam packed full of people. Lots of employees running around around to help who they can. (Reminded me of the Oompa Loompas in Willy Wonkas chocolate factory)

I was surprised to find that I had to stand in three separate lines to purchase my hand strap. 1st line to order, 2nd line to pay and 3rd line to pick up.

I wish we had a place like that here in St. Louis.

thanks guys for the website!!!

btw on that site the 70-200 f4 L is out of stock, as this lens aint being made any more, is there stock left? would there be some in the next month or so?

Id say there still is a demand for it so would it be sold out completely?

thanks again!

DHarry...

I would strongly recommend 17th street photo. There is no storefront and its not as big as B&H.......but you can visit the store on the 5th floor (??I think??) of some undesript building..............And the good part, thier prices are usually a few dollars lower than b&h.............:-)

Check them out!!!

And enjoy NY!!!

If B&H and 17th Street Photo are the best places in New York, what are the best ones in London?

Like Starbucks, Jessops is becoming ubiquitous - but seriously, where would you recommend? Jessops do price match - but just as often push you to their on-line store for anything like a L lens, hood for a Canon, etc. Any little gem I've missed that stocks stuff to buy there and then?

Creve Couer Camera is like Walmart and Wolf Camera is like Nordstroms

Here this is the correct way:
Creve Couer Camera is to Walmart as Wolf Camera is to Nordstroms

Don't recall seeing an announcement from Canon on this. B&H is out of stock on both the USA and Import models of this lens, but that does not mean that it has been discontinued. There are quite a few other online vendors that have this lens in stock; http://www.amazon.com has 4; http://www.jr.com shows it in stock as does http://www.calumetphoto.com

So I'm still confused...B&H shows that both the Domestic and Imported models of the EF 70-200 f2.8L USM is in stock. Where are we going with this?? :?

I honestly dont know!

Anyway whats the difference between (on B&H) imported lenses and USA lenses?

The imported lenses seem to be always cheaper by around 50-100 dollars, any reason? they are the same lenses right? :?:

USA lens is warrantied by Canon USA and can be sent to them for warranty service. Import lens needs to be returned to seller for service; Canon USA will not handle repairs.

I live in Ireland and if i was to buy an imported lens in B&H, could i not just (when i get back to ireland) send it to a canon repair shop if its broken to get repaired?

As its a canon product....it should have a worldwide warranty if repaired by a canon workshop? no?

:?

regardless of where you go, don't forget that everything in NY carries an 8.25% sales tax :( (unless it went up from when I was last there)

It's definitely NOT in the listed price. Until you pay for it that is. :o

kahfluie

The tax is not part of the price. You pay it when you pay for the product at the cash register.

So the cost of a 10D, for example might be:

Sales price: $1,499.00
Tax $ 123.67

Total $1,622.67.

Of course if you buy it online and don't live in NY... you don't pay the tax. :)

can you get the tax refunded when you're crossing the border/leaving the country?

Nope, afraid not. Sales tax in the USA doesn't work like VAT in Europe, or GST in Canada. The tax rate varies by state (some states such as Delaware have no sales tax), and local governments (such as NYC) sometimes add a local component on top of the state tax.

When it comes to shipping orders across state borders, whether a merchant has to charge sales tax to out-of-state people depends on certain factors. However, in the case of B&H, since they only have a "legal presence" in NY state, they do not have to charge tax on out-of-state shipments. Thus, as an earlier poster noted, the best way to avoid the tax is to have the product shipped out of state. If you have a friend in a nearby state, this could be a good way to go.
