my mate has one and has no idea what its called. it attaches to your external flash and it makes the flash go off when it detects another flash (coming from the camera)

It's called an optical slave trigger. Wein is one of the more popular makers of those gizmos.

As PacAce indicated they are called optical slaves.
But, in general they do not function properly with Canon EX flash units. They likely work with the new 580EX II.

Not necessarily. It won't have an optical slave if it's the 500 ST. :)

... and the Sigma EF-500 DG ST won't work with an attached slave sensor or any other non-E-TTL hotshoe adapter.
