There's been a fair amount of discussion at different times about the 135/2 lens and a bit about the 500D filter. Today I remembered to stop in my local Jessops and buy a step-up ring so that I could try the 500D close-up filter on my 135/2.

So for your perusal here are some of the results:

Nice images roger.
I guess I'm confused, according to the canon usa web site, the close up filters come in a variety of sizes, and they make both a 500d for larger lenses and the 250d for smaller lenses. why not just buy the correct filter size? I've been thinking about getting one so I can shoot bugs and stuff while waiting for the wife to finish what she dragged me out of the house to do.

ps, since when is lens spelled with a second e?

Thank you, Darrell.

I have the 77mm 500D, which I bought originally to use with the 100-400 LIS. You are right about the 250D being recommended for smaller lenses, but the largest diameter is 58mm and the 135/2 is 72mm. Because we've talked a lot about this lens I posted the images to give people some idea of the image quality.

On the 135, the 500D will only give a max magnification of 0.41, but it's fun for "intermediate sizes" and much easier to handhold than the bigger lens. Here's my lawn :) :

Go for it! I play with the 500D quite a lot. I would get the 250D/500D for the largest diameter lens you have and use step-up rings for the smaller lenses.

Is there a quality difference if I get B+W closeup filter set or 500D?
