View Full Version : How fake does my sunset look?

No, it's not real.... Whilst there wasn't much there anyway, what was there I blew out. Does this look el crapolo?? I've posted a before and after to compare. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to successfully superimpose another picture in there to make it look as realistic as possible?
If this is in the wrong area then I apologise...
Cheers,
Rhi :-)

Pretty fake. You would be better off just pasting a REAL beach sunset in there.

I wouldn't say el crappo, possibly post-apocalyptic though ;) Part of the issue for me is that the waves have been PPed out of the shot, making the city seem to kind of be floating there.
If you post the sunset you are wanting to use, I'll give it a whack and I'm sure that someone with much better PP skills than I have will come along and try as well. :)

Oh... um I pasted in a REAL beach sunset. I didn't just mix some colours lol.
Good to know though, that's why I asked :-)

If you want to make a superimposed sunset work, I would give the building in the bground a little more contrast. The sky over powers them a bit too much. Still, I think it works best without it.

I see what you mean.... I'll post the sunset pic tomorrow night, if you wouldn't mind having a go that would be great! On a different computer now, so don't have it on this one.
Thanks for your feedback :-)

I know I couldn't do it but I'm thinking that whatever you do with the sky ( colourwise)you would have to have similar colours reflected in the sea.

That's not what I meant. I meant cut the entire top third of the photo out..like the buildings and all....and paste in a FULL sunset, including the sun...like this one for instance...but it depends on how good your photoshop skills are, and how seamlessly you can do it.

You might want to look into cloning out that building in the middle of the pic as well. With that sunset it looks like you're taking beach shots with some war going on in the background.

I would just give it a high contrast B&W look and let it blow out. Sca-rew-eet!

hey 78.. I don't like it. I don't know much about cutting a pasting but wouldn't the color of sand and water need to also reflect a sunset?

That would be alright if it was tone matched.

Can you select the horizon and use the shadow/highlight tool to bring the detail back?

Sweet sunset! Is that Haystack rock in Oregon?

You are missing the reflection in the water. Try adding some of the sunset into the water as reflection... may work a bit better if you are still trying to achieve that look. Keep in mind that when you add things and environment into the image you have to keep in mind everything such as the overall color of the photo that would be affected, the reflection in the water the shadows, etc.
hope this helps,
Olga

Keep the warm color throughout the entire image and it'll look much more realistic.

Forget fake sunsets .. they seldom look right. You not only have to blend the fake sky in (actually the easy part) but also consider the overall ambience / tonal range of the shot and the water color relative to the sky color.
Blue water (or even worse, white) with an orange and red sky screams fake.

Exactly. You can't just paste in a background, and call it a day. You need to make it look seamless, thus, tone mapping is the key.

I agree with Kai, the water and sand do not reflect the colors from the sunset. The sunset is "Warm" and the rest of the photo is "cold". There are a lot of technical issues with the composition, unless you really need this shot to make your package I wouldn't waste time with it. I like Ulfius's fix the best......straight from the Palouse.

Hey Rhid. Haven't seen any of your work for a while. I like the monochrome conversion done above too. Give it a go, but straighten the horizon, unless it makes the B&G look like they're crooked.
Perhaps you could cut and paste his hand so he's not grabbing her ass (arse). Hmmm...on second thoughts...leave it where it is:-)

lol - I love the arse grabbing shot! hahaha. I've just posted some more pics under a new thread - check them out :-)
Yes I love the mono toned versions here too. I've realised that in order to get the pp right, it's Sooooooo important to get the shot right to begin with :-) Next time I'll make sure I don't blow out the sunset!
