View Full Version : Assisting the Largest Wedding she's done so far...

As some of you know, my good friend Jen 'song4themoon' asked me to help assist her with a couple of weddings she's shooting this month due to the fact that she is getting close to introducing her new little one to the world.
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=376113
Here are some of my shots that I've worked on so far. I haven't had a whole lot of time to really work on them since I can only process these in between my busy work schedule and QT with the family, but hopefully I'll have more to show by the end of the week. Jen truly is a talented photographer, so I can only hope my images are half as good as hers. And I'm honored she asked me do this in the first place. Thanks, Jen. You guys and gals are pretty brutal on the wedding forums, but I'm fully prepared to take the lumps.
Oh, and there's no chocolate or vanilla action involved in any of these. ;)

Since these are all fabulous to me, I'll get my least favorites out of the way - #18 and #20 - Just not enough to excite me. The rest are just superb! You said no chocolate action was going on, :D what did you do with the following: 2,10, 11, 12. (I love the PP on these.) Great job Ed! You and Jen make a super team... Maybe a partnership down the road? I'm humbled by these.

Those shots were processed using a preset I came up with in Lightroom. I guess it is sort of chocolate-like.
Me and Jen partners? If only I were so lucky. :(
Thanks for feedback, all! Oh, and I used the 5D, 20D and 40D. Care to guess which shots were taken with what camera? heh heh...

Nice pics Ed, I love 1, 6 and 10. I think you did a very good job on these.
I am not a fan of the blurr on the last 3, otherwise great job!! Thanks again for helping me out.
Hmmmm... that almost chocolaty looking action that you used there makes me doubt my beloved chocolate syrup action now.. this one looks awesome. You said its from lightroom?
And lmao at your post title :)

Yeah, that's an LR preset I came up with. Pretty sweet, eh?
Regarding 19 and 20, I'm not sure if you recall that conversation we had at the reception about using bad shots, but those two in particular were badly OOF, so I ushered in the gaussian blur technique. Guess that didn't save these, eh?

I think in 19 you might be able to get away with it.. 20 not so much. But you have so many good shots, it really doesnt matter.
Do you have any reception shots? I am curious how those turned out

Here's one I posted in the recent Canon 15mm Fisheye thread...
(removed)
13, 14, and 15 are all reception shots as well. However, I think I got more shots of the guest than I do of the B&G as far as the reception goes. I need to sit down an examine them more closely and figure out how I want to process those.

Well done Mr. Malone (or is that Mr. Lord?)...
They are all very professional, well composed, and full of emotion, but #6 is exceptional, as is #15.
This couple definitely got a bargain on their wedding photos!

Wow! You've got a GREAT series here! You did an awesome job telling the story of the day. There are so many pics, I'm not going to comment on each one, but 6,7,8,10,11,13,14, and the fisheye stand out to me. I think you should shoot weddings on your own, too! Seriously! A couple comments...the PP isn't very uniform, it seems to be several different people PP'ing them, if that makes sense. Some of the B&W's look great, others look dark and a little flat, but can be easily fixed. #15 is an example of that. 6, 10, &11, the PP is awesome. I'm not fond of the softy-ness in some of them. I like #2, but the makeup artist's arm is distracting (and women are very self-conscious about their arms). Thanks for posting these! I hope to see more from you in the future!

Great work, my one suggestion would be to do a lens correction on #7. The angles on the sides are a little distracting for me, it is a beautiful image.
So when sre you going out on your own?

Ed,
There are just wonderful! Where do I start? #s 6, 7, 8, and 10 are stunning photos. You have captured the emotion and beauty of the wedding to perfection. Well done! The B&G will be delighted that you were backing Song up. I saw her photos yesterday and the two of you together have nailed it completely!

#6 seems to be a crowd pleaser. With the exception of the few shots in which the soft focus effect was applied, all processing was pretty much done in Lightroom. For shot #6, I used a preset I made up, and then tweak it a little bit. I was shooting for an almost Dragan-like effect there.
And thanks for the comments everyone. I really do appreciate all the feedback.

6: Is Hot Sizzle OH BAY-BY type hott. Man that is really good no doubt.
7: Gorgeous. So glad you got down so we can see the beauty.
8: Perfect moment. Perfect timing...their lips dont look toooo smoooched.

The only one I'm not fond of is #4 as the camera's LCD is well exposed, but I wish you had brought up the shadows a bit so that the rest of the image is also well exposed.
The rest simply rocks, esp. #6 as everyone else said!

Actually, I did bring up the shadows. It was much darker before, but I can only recover the shadows so much before it starts to really look like total crap. :(
But thanks for the recommendation. All of your comments and critiques are a very important part of my professional growth and development. ;)

I used the 24L. Shutter squeeze, much like trigger squeeze on a rifle or handgun, is an important factor in controlling unwanted shake during longer exposures. I almost always shoot hand-held, and I always try to maintain a good steady form when firing off frames. Lots of caffeine typically won't help. ;)
