View Full Version : D70's noise levels that much worse than 10D?

Guys,
Look at this pic from dpreview's D70 review gallery:
http://img2.dpreview.com/gallery/nikond70_samples/dsc_0133+dee20.jpg
Is it possible that the D70 would produce an image
this noisey at ISO 200? Look at the shady sections
underside the bridge. Or is this a misprocessed RAW
image? This doesn't look like a shot that would be
that difficult to make. Maybe Phil Askey is sabotaging
his D70 review samples because he is on Canon's payroll. :-)
Cheers, Cadenza

I would be very careful making accusations like "Maybe Phil Askey is sabotaging his D70 review samples because he is on Canon's payroll".
I'm sure he is not and that the picture (warehouses in Wapping, east London I believe) represents the performance of the camera when the picture was taken.
Of course you haven't got a 10D picture of the same subject at the same time and same settings to compare to either.

I think a little hazing lens flair has hurt that shot a bit. No, I don't think it is typical of a D70 though I confess that I haven't seen one in action. Its probably almost as good as the 10D and certainly clean at ISO 200.

Notice the overexposed section below each bridge which allmost directly fit in with bright strips of sky??
Something weird is going on here! Is the camera or raw converter cocking up?
The noise is only really in those bright sections under each bridge but i'd more likely be asking those are there in the first place!

Well, there's quite a bit of noise in the
green sign, door frame on the far right,
lower corner too. Très étrange!

Ive spent the last few days looking at samples from the D70 and the 300D from various web sites and after being very keen on the D70 I have now changed my mind and will be getting a 300D based on the better picture quality, and much less noise!.... there just seems to be a much smoother and better resolution to the images... the D70 does seem to edge it on contrast and saturation but nothing which i wasnt able to add to the 300D images in photoshop much more effectivley. I just get the impression the 300Ds sensor is much better quality... and then its down to lenses.
my 2 cents
