I should really think twice before buying more photo gear. Inevitably, I end up having to buy even more gear because one thing leads to another. :-) My new 17-40L doesn't fit in my just a couple months old Lowepro Topload Zoom 2. Or, it does (the 17-40L is pretty much the same size as the 28-135), but the lens hood is a little troublesome, and I can't fit both lenses in the bag, at least when I keep the 50/1.8 at the bottom.
So, I'm once again shopping for a new walk-around bag, preferably something from either Lowepro or Tamrac, because those two brands are most easily available here in Finland. I'm somewhat partial for Lowepro, as they are cheaper (for some reason, Tamrac bags are much more expensive here than Lowepro bags) and I have been quite satisfied with them so far.
My new constraints for the bag are:
The bag must fit my 10D with either the 17-40L or the 28-135 attached, both preferably with the lens hood on
The bag must also fit the other lens of the pair, as well as the 50/1.8, and a 550EX flash (with a Sto-Fen OmniBounce either separately or attached)
The camera should be easily removable from the bag, ready to shoot
The bag should be as small as possible while fitting the previous requirements. The bag will be carried through crowds, shops, and whatnot, and I'd rather not drop anything from shelves etc.
Preferably, the bag should - in addition to a shoulder strap - also have belt hoops so I can keep it on my belt too (although the bag should preferably not have a belt of its own because that makes it difficult to wear my normal belt underneath (I've got way too much gear on my normal belt). I carry the bag to my side to leave the front and back free for a regular backpack.
So far, I've made a quick survey of the Lowepro and Tamrac web pages to determine which bags might fit the task. I haven't been able to check the bags at the local camera store (they don't even have any Lowepro bags in stock, they'll have to order them). The models I've been looking at are:
Tamrac 5603 (System 3; 135 euros, I told you Tamrac is expensive here although the price is possibly old)
Lowepro Nova 3 AW (about 45 euros)
Lowepro Topload Zoom AW (although with the depth of the bag it might be difficult to dig for the gear which is stored at the bottom)
Tamrac 604 (Zoom Traveler 4)
Lowepro Mini Mag AW (about 90 euros)
Lowepro Off Road (75 euros)
Tamrac 5606 (System 6; 162 euros)
Tamrac 606 (Zoom Traveler 6)
Lowepro Stealth Reporter 200 AW
Tamrac 706 (Deluxe Convertible)
Lowepro Toploader 75 AW (same comments apply as for the TLZ AW)
Lowepro Pro Mag 2 AW
The bags have been sorted by internal volume. The first bags may be too small, and the Pro Mag 2 AW is most probably way larger than I need.
Does anyone have any experience with these bags, especially with setups similar to mine?
