View Full Version : Oh no, new bag needed again

I should really think twice before buying more photo gear. Inevitably, I end up having to buy even more gear because one thing leads to another. :-) My new 17-40L doesn't fit in my just a couple months old Lowepro Topload Zoom 2. Or, it does (the 17-40L is pretty much the same size as the 28-135), but the lens hood is a little troublesome, and I can't fit both lenses in the bag, at least when I keep the 50/1.8 at the bottom.

So, I'm once again shopping for a new walk-around bag, preferably something from either Lowepro or Tamrac, because those two brands are most easily available here in Finland. I'm somewhat partial for Lowepro, as they are cheaper (for some reason, Tamrac bags are much more expensive here than Lowepro bags) and I have been quite satisfied with them so far.

My new constraints for the bag are:

The bag must fit my 10D with either the 17-40L or the 28-135 attached, both preferably with the lens hood on
The bag must also fit the other lens of the pair, as well as the 50/1.8, and a 550EX flash (with a Sto-Fen OmniBounce either separately or attached)
The camera should be easily removable from the bag, ready to shoot
The bag should be as small as possible while fitting the previous requirements. The bag will be carried through crowds, shops, and whatnot, and I'd rather not drop anything from shelves etc.

Preferably, the bag should - in addition to a shoulder strap - also have belt hoops so I can keep it on my belt too (although the bag should preferably not have a belt of its own because that makes it difficult to wear my normal belt underneath (I've got way too much gear on my normal belt). I carry the bag to my side to leave the front and back free for a regular backpack.

So far, I've made a quick survey of the Lowepro and Tamrac web pages to determine which bags might fit the task. I haven't been able to check the bags at the local camera store (they don't even have any Lowepro bags in stock, they'll have to order them). The models I've been looking at are:

Tamrac 5603 (System 3; 135 euros, I told you Tamrac is expensive here although the price is possibly old)
Lowepro Nova 3 AW (about 45 euros)
Lowepro Topload Zoom AW (although with the depth of the bag it might be difficult to dig for the gear which is stored at the bottom)
Tamrac 604 (Zoom Traveler 4)
Lowepro Mini Mag AW (about 90 euros)
Lowepro Off Road (75 euros)
Tamrac 5606 (System 6; 162 euros)
Tamrac 606 (Zoom Traveler 6)
Lowepro Stealth Reporter 200 AW
Tamrac 706 (Deluxe Convertible)
Lowepro Toploader 75 AW (same comments apply as for the TLZ AW)
Lowepro Pro Mag 2 AW

The bags have been sorted by internal volume. The first bags may be too small, and the Pro Mag 2 AW is most probably way larger than I need.

Does anyone have any experience with these bags, especially with setups similar to mine?

I just ordered the Adorama Slinger because I was looking for something relatively small, and easy to carry and didnt look like a camera bag.
Many here recommend it.
It's only $39 too! I will give my review when it arrives next week, but many here love it.
It will fit the camera with the 17-40L mounted, along with the 550EX, and the 50/1.8. Im not sure if there would also be room for the 28-135 as well.

I have the Adorama slinger and will say it is a good bag for packing light.

Here is link to a pic. The 28-135IS is mounted on the camera.

Hmm, I don't think it will fit the 28-135 too. At least in the image at http://www.adorama.com/catlite.tpl?op=large_image&sku=GBSLBK.jpg it looks like there's not that much extra space after the camera, 17-40L, 50/1.8 and 550EX. It's probably also a bit too much of a hassle to order the bag from the States, as shipping (and import duties and tax) would cost too much in comparison to the item itself.

Chris1le, does the 550EX fit in that front pocket?
That is how Adorama shows it in all it's promo pictures, but with the zipper open. So I wonder if it will really fit with the zipper closed.

I just got the LowePro Compact AW...I'm not sure how 'walk-around' capable it is, but I'm happy with it so far.

Sounds like the slinger is the bag to get for compact carrying. Hit me up for one.

I just tried it and yes it does fit in the front pocket. It is pretty tight and there is no padding on the front but it will fit.[/list]

Yeah, I figured. It's pretty much the same size as the belt bag part of the Orion AW I have, and that one is too large.

Does anyone have the Nova 3 AW? At least according to the specifications it seems like it could be about the right size, along with the Tamrac 5606 (System 6), and the Lowepro Mini Mag AW and Off Road. The Nova 3 AW is also relatively cheap...

Best bag I ever bought! For $39 you can't afford not to have one!

All I can say is no matter how big a bag you think you need, get 3X that size. You will eventually fill it. I can't tell you how many "big" bags I've gotten, and they're all too small.

OK, I don't always carry all my equipment with me, but I do like to keep it kind-of together when its stored. Plus, when I travel, I do tend to pack it all into the car before I leave home.

Yes, that's why I have the Photo Trekker AW II - it fits all of my current gear (minus the 28-80 I never use). However, I'm currently looking for a smaller bag, one that I can carry and not worry about dropping items from store shelves etc.

Looks like a great bag. PLUS did you notice the clip on attachment at $1.75? This is just what I'm looking for to hold the two zips on my backpack shut together, without actually using a padlock and key! (If the bag's stuffed too full, the zips tends to wiggle open - who knows what might fall out).

From a woman's point of view, camera bags are like pairs of shoes - you can never have too many

Somewhat off topic, but would moving the two zips together to the side help (i.e. towards one end of the whole zip, as opposed to having them together at the top)? That way, the items in the bag help to keep the second zip in place, at least in my regular backpacks. This may depend on the backpack in question though.

My main bag's a Domke F1X, but for a small one I too use the Slinger. It holds the 10D with 28-90, 35 f/2 (under the 10D), Sigma 15-30 and Canon 75-300 IS (either side of the camera/lens combo), 550EX (front pocket), spare battery and cards (mesh pocket in top) and a cell phone or two. Also a throw-away rain poncho in the little back pocket in case of rain.

Does the Lowe bag you have not have their "sliplock" system on it (hoops onn the sides etc)?

If so, why not buy yourself a Lowe sliplock lens case and attach it to the side?

You could also get their Street and Field belt. Attach your Toploader to that, and lens cases, flash bags etc etc as your kit grows?

The other advantage with this is that when you don't want to look like a photo geek, you can strip the kit down to the bare essentials :)

No, unfortunately the Topload Zoom 2 doesn't have it. The Toploader 65/70/75 AW bags would have the SlipLock system, but the Topload Zoom bags don't.

That's definitely something to consider. The S&F system also seems quite a bit cheaper than the Kinesis one. The camera stores here don't list it though, but it would probably be possible to order them.

couple of Qs for the slinger owners (especially w/ 300Ds)...

+i'm thinking of bringing my 300D when i go snowboarding this upcoming season, would this handle some water-resistance? if not, i'm thinking of putting this bag w/in my clive backpack

+i'm thinking of using this bag w/ my 300D+tamron 28-75 attached, 50mm f1.8, and extra battery (and eventually a flash)--would this be a good walkaround bag instead of my canon 2400 gadget bag?

non-sligner related Q...

+i'm gonna go on a trip late-october overseas, i'd like to carry my cam+accessories part of my carryon bag/backpack. what do you guys/gals recommend for something like this?

TIA
