Perhaps the photographer forgot to finalize the disk when he made it.
Or maybe it's just a defective disk. Can your friend read anything on the disk using Windows Explorer?

Print screen should always work. Try going into DOS and see if you could see the files. Try it on another computer.

Maybe the photographer has protected the images to keep your friend from buying the disk for viewing and then printing his own pictures. Did he buy the disk with any restrictions? i.e. for viewing purposes only?

Since you mentioned "print screen" and "copy and paste" I'm assuming that you can at least view the images. What's the extention used for the file names? .PCD?
Have you tried using Photoshop or whatever editor you use to open it?

He might be running some software that does a slideshow and nothing more. Some photogs do that so that people can't get their own prints made, but have to go back to the photographer. It can be a concern of money and/or quality control.
Read the fine print on the contract - it might not be a rip-off. It might not make them happy, but it would still be perfectly fine and legal. I, for one, would not want to give someone a CD of images only to find them printing the images at Walmart... And if I gave someone a CD slideshow of my images you can bet that they wouldn't get the rights to print them.

Did your friend buy the CD of images to print at will from, or just watch a slide show... I would guess, it is a slide show he purchased and not a disk full of image data for printing from. There should be information that can be accessed on how to order prints of the images. Something like "For prints contact: Your friendly neighborhood photographer at 555-1212"
The images would likely be copyrighted by the photographer.

Probably disabled intentionally. It is not about the photographer ripping him off, it is about the photographer protecting his work. Imagine if your friend were able to print the pictures... here is what has happened in the past:
- client gets CD with photos
- images are 800x600
- makes a great slide show on screen
- decides to print their own 8x10 to save high cost of professional prints
- gets photo back from store...terrible quality (because file has been resized for screen)
- client tells friends...this is what you get when your photographer shoots digital!
- photographer gets a bad rap...client is disappointed...everyone HATES digital
Therefore:
- professional creates CD slideshow with copyright.
- client is unhappy that they can't print, but order prints from pro.
- prints come back looking BETTER THAN FILM.
- client is happy with prints,, just wished he could have saved $100 dollars on pictures from the most memorable day in his life
The names in this story have been changed to protect the innocent. This is a true story.

It could be very simple. Almost all binary files contain a header in which the file type is identified as well as the filename name extention. The "protection" could be as simple as changing that header to one PS would not recognise and therefor would refuse to load. Then the photographer could have developed his own photoviewer that do recognise the header and therefor can display the photo. This is just a theory!

You have to provide us with more information, otherwise we'll be guessing for a long time here what's happening.
What is the file format of the image files - TIFF, JPEG, or something else? What is the filename extension (.tif, .jpg, ...?)
What happens when he tries to open such an image in Photoshop? Does he get an error message? If so, what's the error message? What are the steps he is following to open the file in Photoshop?

OK. Go into MS-DOS and type D:\ -enter-(or what ever your CD drive is). Then type DIR -enter- you should be able to see the files on the main dir. If you can't see the files then type CD dirnamehere -enter-.Then when you find the image files type copy filenameonthedisk.imgtype C:\newfilename.jpg -enter-
Hope this helps.DOS is simple once you learn it.
