Here.. I'd say the majority of SLR owners do anyways (use PS)
Photoshop Elements is a good starting alternative. It has a lot of Photoshops functionality.. and yet can be found for $50.00 at "Sam's Club"... or at many other places when it is on sale. (it retails for $99.00)
The other options is JASC Paint Shop Pro..but I'd recommend Elements..

Try GIMP..

But for real versatility, Photoshop is still the king.

I have both Elements and Paint Shop Pro 8; and I use PSP 99% of the time.
I find that it's easier to use. Cannot see spending hundreds of dollars on Photoshop before I understand the lesser programs!

I use Photoshop Elements 2, which came bundled with my DRebel kit. I wanted some of the functionality of PS CS, but wasn't prepared to drop another few hundred up front (especially as I'm still learning the basics & find it quite daunting), so I bought the book The Hidden Power of Photoshop Elements 2, by Richard Lynch: http://www.hiddenelements.com/
The book includes a CD that gives you curves adjustments, as well as other tools (with more available for download from the website, including a channel mixer interface). It's not CS, but for the price it's a very powerful tool.

i found PS elements to be easier to use than paint shop pro. if you ask for help here on the forum, you will get your answers in the PS format 9 out of ten times. i have a copy of elements2 and a couple of books for cheap if anyone is interestd. i now have PSCS, so i don't need them.
