I have a number of 35mm slides from a previous era and would like to convert them to digital. Do you know of any reputable services for this?

Scanning slides can be tricky. I know since I've used one or another slide scanner since 1997. It is especially tricky if you have a varying assortment of slides shot on different films from different eras. Some fade, and some don't. Some are grainy, and some aren't. On some, the 2x2 mounts are deteriorating into dust.

If you are trying to get a low-res scan, it should not be that difficult. If you are trying to get a high-res scan with color matching, then you will be pulling your hair out.

When I scan slides, I end up with TIF files at 100-150MB for each one. Most of the scanning services do it in a completely automatic machine. If your slides are all pretty consistent, then that might get good results. But if you have the wild assortment, then they have to be custom-tweaked by eyeball, and that takes time.

I use a Canon FS4000US scanner for slides or film negs.
