Appologies ahead of time for such a basic question, but I would like others' thoughts on this.

I know the specs & functions/feature of the 420, but what do you all view as the important differences between it and the 10D pop-up flash. Is the biggest difference the amount of output light/distance?

The reason I ask; I have been shooting ALOT of fill-flash portraits outdoors for wedding practice using 1. the pop-up & 2. an old vivitar tilt-head flash. I've been getting almost equal results with the two (for fill-flash at least)...and am still pondering whether or not I should purchase a new 420.

Thanks,
daniel

Keep in mind that a certain fraction of the cost of a 420EX is tied up in the wireless slave feature. If you use your 420EX strictly on-camera, then you are not using that feature at all, and other brands and models will perform similarly. Some users get some good use out of the dark autofocus pattern that is emitted from the 420EX.

Nevermind.... decided to just purchase rather than waste more time trying to make an older-style flash work.

Daniel, don“t do that. I have bought first one Sigma which worked quite well until I broke the flash shoe. Then I ordered the 420EX and I am very happy with it. The plastic quality of the Sigma is very cheap. The 420 is much smaller and lighter and the plastic and construction is perfect.
I would prefer it even in comparison with the 550 EX. The 550 and the Sigma are to big and to heavy.
