I know that the Getty Museum doesn't allow you to use tripods inside the buildings, but what about outside in the garden? Anybody know for sure?

They won't let you use tripods primarily because they don't want patrons to have a tripod with them *at all* while at the Getty due to accidents (whacking a statue, etc. with a tripod). At least thats the story I got from the information desk when I went earlier this year :)

Cool, thanks for the info. One less thing to lug around I guess. So should I push my luck and bring a monopod? I won't be going in the galleries at all, just shooting in the gardens.

I don't think you'll need any monopods for the gardens, plenty of light during the hours they are open for hand held shooting.
