I'll be shooting a HS prom in several weeks time using a 30D +24-70 f2.8. It will be held at a hotel ballroom with fairly high ceilings. I did a forum search here and based on wedding images I've shot (since I think the settings would be similar), both point that the 24-70 will be adequate. Should I bring a flash along?

I'm also thinking of picking up a prime to go along with the 24-70 - either a 85 f1.8 or 135 f2. *think think* I need something fast and with more reach than the 24-70. The 135 f2 sounds really good, 2X longer than 70mm, or is that too long for a hotel ballroom?

Storage-wise, a bag would seem ungainly for someone with a suit and all IMHO. I plan to carry just the camera with the extra prime in my pocket. Then comes the problem of who will babysit the camera if I ask/am asked to dance?

Me needs help

Should I bring a flash along? If you can dial it down to provide a touch of fill, I would. The 135 f2 sounds really good, 2X longer than 70mm, or is that too long for a hotel ballroom? Yes/No/Maybe.
