Custom Function-04 & Football

I needing advice on C.Fn-04. I am shooting football in AL Servo mode. Which function should I be using 1,2 or 3?

I'm using 2, but I shoot on "M". Some use 3.

If youre not using "M", but you are using "Av" or "Tv", use 3. Otherwise the exposure will be locked the entire time you have the shutter pressed and that WILL ruin some shots. Using 4-3 will make the camera re-expose for every shot taken, instead of just locking it through the whole burst like 4-1 would.

I was reading about this recently and somewhere it said that whether you shoot with a single focus point or all of them can affect whether you should use 1, 2, or 3.

Can anyone comment on this?

...a single focus point or all of them can affect whether you should use 1, 2, or 3. I use 4-2 with a single point & I choose it with the 20D joystick, so it's a fairly fast process to switch.

Iv been using 3, just seemed like the auto focus has a hard time locking in on the subject. I am also shooting in Av.Should I try Tv?
I use my 70-200mm with 1.4 TC. & 580 EX flash. thanks for the tips

The 1.4 TC is likely hindering your AF performance, especially if you are using it at night (I assume since you are using flash).

Ok, maybe a dumb question but:

Are all custom functions identical across the entire selection of Canon cameras?

Since I don't have them all, I don't know - but is it safe to assume that the custom function the OP is talking about (or any CF for that matter) is the same on his camera as it is mine?

Tv, CF 4/3 for me...

M, 4-2 on AI Servo here. I was recommended to use 3 but 2 seemed much more intuitive to me once I started really using it. I also switch between AF points with the joystick, but during action I'm still not comfortable with trying to change it up. Most of the time I'm on the center or a third-line, to give the subject some frame to run into. Try all of them and see what's working for you. If I didn't I'd be using 3 (which is fine) and I don't think I'd be quite as comfortable with it.
