I'd say they're much much more than 'useable'.

Are they straight from the camera or have you used any noise filters on them ?

Nice job and an outrageous ISO!

Is the camera behind the net movable? How are you following the action with it, or is it all be chance?

Nice, really, really nice, Gavin! I love the colors you're getting at 6400 -- unbelievable! Are you having any AF issues with the MKIII? I'm seriously thinking about getting one for next season but hesitate for a few reasons: 1) The AF issue, 2) my budget and 3) I really do like to have a beer and visit with friends after the lights come on at evening games ;). I doubt that I'll get one until the AF issue is solved, I can work it into the budget if I really want to and if I shoot late into the game I can get relief pitchers and won't have to shoot many games in Florida's daytime summer heat. So, I guess about the only thing stopping me is the AF issue and I really would appreciate your opinion on that. Specifically, is the MKIII's AI Servo AF as good or better than the MKII's?

Gavin - your usual top notch stuff, liking the quality at 6400 - must make some of the Essex Dungeons you usually frequent seem like Summer Houses!

Great stuff again, and good to see how 6400 works in the darkness of some non league grounds. One minor thing I'm curious about - if you submitted the first one to a paper or agency would you crop it tighter on the right to remove the word c**p from unfortunately being so prominent in the background?

Huh, interesting. The ISO 3200 stuff looks nice. ISO 6400... it has good noise control in the skin tones, but the backgrounds on both shots.... well.... errr...... um.... good for newspaper/web work but not sure they would hold up to much more then that. Better then we had before, that much is sure though. Good post, thanks.

Well, these are at least marginal, ho hum. Maybe I'll just send my 1DMIII back when it arrives, sigh. Just Kidding ... fun stuff ... I wonder how concerts will look?

Is the camera behind the net movable? How are you following the action with it, or is it all be chance?Cheers Super... it's pretty much all down to luck with the remote camera, stop down a bit and hope it's pointing in the right direction. If you try to cover the whole goal, you end up cropping too much... so you have to choose a 'chunk' of goal to cover and hope that the action takes place in that area.

In all honesty, I can't see a huge difference between the AF on the MkIII and MkII - the MkIII seems to focus slightly better in low light but it behaves in a similar way in 'normal' or 'bright' lighting conditions. So, in real world testing it seems OK... and  you won't find me shooting any test charts!

A rough and ready attempt here:

http://www.tgsphoto.co.uk/forum_images/nr001.jpg

...seems to improve the backgrounds a fair bit. When I have time, I'll do some fine tuning.

I've also run off a couple of large prints without any NR and, in all honesty, they look very good - certainly better than 'newspaper' quality. Also bear in mind that it opens up imaging opportunities that previously weren't really available... so that has to be a bonus.

Great shots. It's a lot different now with ISO 6400 even 1600 ISO as in early film days the best we had was 400 ISO. (Black & White)
Guys thank your lucky stars times have changed.

Interesting that you mention film... towards the end of the 'old' days, I used rolls of Kodak TMAX 3200 under poor floodlights and would sometimes rate the film at ISO 12800  It was interesting to see the results out of the developing tank ;) Grain like golf balls springs to mind.

Nice to see digital catching up now... without the golf balls ;)

I can't imagine you'll be using the extreme ISO setting that often, but the ISO 3200 setting might be handy from time to time. Also, ISO 2000 and ISO 2500 might have some mileage when you've got your elbows on the ring canvas.

Gavin.

Thinking back to 1951 Colour Slide film was only 10 Weston which I think makes it 8 ISO.

Thanks, Gavin. Perhaps I can convince Santa I've been good enough to deserve one. It's about time to upgrade and retire my well used MKII to backup status anyway but there's no real rush since I won't have much need for either until mid February.

Strange. I can see your website, but the forum images, like http://www.tgsphoto.co.uk/forum_images/6400004.jpg, don't display.

OTOH, images in this thread do: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=402220 & they appear to be in the same folder.

He deletes the old and replace with new updated, so that we can't see most of the old shots.
